Abstract

Sporting events mark the center of interest in the social life for many countries in the world. However, if we focus on the Americas, this importance is even more obvious. Sport becomes a reason for encounter, community, and connection. It brings out levels of interest and reinforces local, regional or beyond that, the game that is often unparalleled. Few people escape the passion that surrounds a country in the face of success in global competitions. This phenomenon, based on collective pride, pushes boundaries and includes even the most critical viewers. Can we consider this contradiction one of the keys to success?

Argument

Sporting events mark the center of interest in the social life for many countries in the world. However, if we focus on the Americas, this importance is even more obvious. Sport becomes a reason for encounter, community, and connection. It brings out levels of interest and reinforces local, regional or beyond that, the game that is often unparalleled. Few people escape the passion that surrounds a country in the face of success in global competitions. This phenomenon, based on collective pride, pushes boundaries and includes even the most critical viewers. Can we consider this contradiction one of the keys to success?

Considering that in the midst of these shows, the spectators are as important as athletes that we intend to reflect from the world in which we live and draw new conclusions. What is the center of interest of each country? What topic will most interest the social mass capable of democratically deciding the political future of a nation? Can we think of power interested in sports as an element of control? Therefore, we will be interested in the politicians who come to power after making themselves known via the world of sport.

At the same time, in certain cultural environments -especially those linked with the high social sectors-, the passion for sporting events has also been associated with ignorance. We propose to reflect on this idea. Can we set a relationship in which interest in this type of shows depends on the cultural level? What elements of the sport will citizens be interested in according to their sociocultural level? Will anthropological aspects play a determining role? Will there be a difference in perception between a person who is interested in different forms of art or scientific knowledge and one who is not? Is the euphoria in mass phenomena unleashed regardless of sociocultural level? Do the different profiles of groups of populations reason in the same way before this passion?

The creation of sport idols is a phenomenon that contributes to the popularity of sport within the world and within our ever-evolving history. What links do we find between historical figures and sport? Does society value a citizen’s ethics differently based on their sporting achievements? What differences can we observe in the form of idolizing sports figures?

There are several axes of reflection that we propose around this topic: To what extent we will arrive? Are we going in an even greater direction of control of political life and social by the world of sport? Therefore, we will be interested in reflecting on each field (culture, politics, society) from this perspective to have a greater angle of vision of what our future societies will be like.

In a global world, where trends can be observed from other countries or continents, the comparative analysis of the evolution could be equally interesting to evaluate the possible changes in a European context, in which there are numerous sports idols originating from the Americas.
