Transversal skills: From university to the world of employment
Les compétences transversales : De l’université au monde de l’emploi
Published on Monday, November 07, 2022
Abstract
Over the last two decades, Morocco has made remarkable progress and has undertaken various reforms whose main objective is to lay the foundations for a multidimensional national development. The multiple renovations that higher education has undergone are aimed at developing scientific research as well as opening the university to the socio-professional environment. Professors, teaching teams, professionals, etc. will reflect together on the challenges and modes of development of learning methods, means and teaching resources that enable learners to acquire new skills that can accompany them in their personal and professional lives and serve them in the long term.

Argument
Over the past two decades, Morocco has made remarkable progress and has undertaken various reforms, the main objective of which is to lay the foundations for multidimensional national development. The multiple renovations that higher education has experienced, for their part, are aimed both at the development of scientific research and at the opening of the university to the socio-professional environment. This is why great importance is given to the development of the methodological, linguistic, and communication skills of the student, in order to prepare him or her for an easy integration into the socio-economic environment, both national and international. "Transversal" learning, also known as "transferable skills", is one of the cornerstones of modern educational reform, which commits institutions to promoting learning and ensuring the better preparedness of students for the workplace and the future (Currie , 1991). Which competencies—basically those most highly regarded by employers—provide relevant access to knowledge and satisfy academic requirements in order to achieve quality learning? These include the ability to think critically, to be flexible, to have a variety of skills, to organize, plan, manage time, to be a leader, to take initiative, to be dynamic, to be a team player, etc.
Reviewing instructional strategies and challenging teaching practises are necessary for the professional integration of recent graduates. Higher education should foster abilities that enable students to adapt to various labour market settings so they can cope with professional obstacles. Hence, active pedagogy and soft skills have a tight link. In fact, updating instructional methods and practises aids in the development of cross-disciplinary abilities that may be readily applied to the workplace. As a result, art, particularly film, theatre, dance, and music, among many others, enables the development of a variety of transversal abilities in an engaging environment. We identify a number of skills in this respect, including effective communication, active listening, problem-solving, emotional intelligence, motivation, creativity, a feeling of belonging, autonomy, etc.
How do soft skills work? Where do they fit within the disciplinary education system? What educational techniques are best for imparting these skills to students? How do you rate them? What modern competencies are necessary to succeed in the workplace today? How does the need to promote cross-curricular learning connect to the requirement for disciplinary education? What type of cooperation is possible between the instructional elements and the cross-curricular competencies? How can art help students develop abilities that they can apply in a variety of contexts?
These and other significant issues will be discussed at this conference. Educators, educational teams, professionals, and others will take part in this event to discuss the best ways to provide students transferable skills that will benefit them in both their personal and professional life. Round tables, seminars, and other special activities will be used to promote open discussion among participants and students. The conference will evolve within the following five axes ( the list is non-exhaustive):
- Axis 1: Language teaching and development of transversal skills.
- Axis 2: Soft skills, employability, and entrepreneurship.
- Axis 3: What is the assessment for transversal skills at university?
- Axis 4: Transversal skills and pedagogical innovation.
- Axis 5: Art and culture at the service of the development of transversal skills.
