Abstract

Conference of the Digital Paleography Research Project "Transcribing the Portuguese Inquisition Trials (1536-1821)" for the creation of an automatic transcription model of the Portuguese Inquisition court records.

Announcement

Presentation

This colloquium marks the end of the exploratory research project "The Transcription of the Processes of the Portuguese Inquisition (1536-1821)" (TraPrInq), funded by FCT, in which, for 18 months, a Luso-Brazilian team of paleographers created an artificial intelligence model based on machine learning for the automatic transcription of the processes of the Portuguese Inquisition The present colloquium responds to a double need: to make a methodological evaluation of the results of the project, and to explore the horizons and possibilities of digital palaeography, which has seen a marked development in the last decade.

Submission guidelines

The colloquium is therefore open to proposals for papers from researchers interested in these topics.

The paper proposed, to be submitted to: traprinq@gmail.com until February, 19,

should not exceed 20 minutes, covering the two fields in question, both (a) digital practices in the study of primary sources and (b) field studies. It is advisable to find out about the current project by consulting the two reference sites. Special attention will be given to proposals that can advance the subsequent phase of this project, i.e. the creation of structures or the use of existing platforms for large-scale transcription and editing of documentary collections, institutional collaboration with the archives that hold these collections, etc.
