On Asceticism: Crossing Traditions, New Perspectives
De l’ascétisme : traditions croisées, nouvelles perspectives
Published on Thursday, April 27, 2023
Abstract

Argument
Asceticism, or askêsis in the original Greek, designates an exercise of the self on the self, a practice of philosophical life in antiquity. If Pierre Hadot was right to call it a ‘spiritual exercise’, such an exercise seems to have disappeared in the course of the de-spiritualisation of the Western world, perhaps since ‘the death of God’, as Nietzsche proclaimed. To a certain extent, the philosophy of today concerns not so much the wisdom to achieve tranquillity of the soul, the happiness of man or the virtue of the ascetic-king, as the knowledge to develop theories, discourses, or systems. As such, research on asceticism reinvents itself as interdisciplinary studies beyond narrowly defined Western philosophy.
Indeed, modern reflections are not limited to a single way of thinking about asceticism, but rather they are found at the intersection of disciplines, methods, and approaches of diverse and heterogeneous origins. For example, prior to the emergence of the Buddhist duṣkaracaryā (denoting strenuous exercise), asceticism was more about the plural modes of self-cultivation (xiushen or yangsheng) in Daoist or Confucian traditions, which involve respiratory, somatic, and artistic techniques. This potential variety of asceticism, yet to be rediscovered, brings new sources for an introspection on its limit.
However, diversity does not prevent these reflections from remaining closely related to enquiries into the body and nature and the conflicting desires to consume and preserve them. Such enquiries no longer content themselves with seeking meditative and rational exercises, freedom in a world beyond, or a Weberian vocation, but open to an art of living shared by a future community to come.
Overall, this colloquium aims to re-evaluate asceticism in contemporary debates, exhausted by a denaturalising capitalism and beset by post-industrial entanglements such as health and ecological crises. To do so, we will trace asceticism in philosophical, religious, cultural and artistic forms, move beyond the boundaries between different disciplines, and come up with new perspectives on asceticism.
