Renewal and transformation of sport participation issues for people with disabilities
Renouvellement et transformation des enjeux de participation sportive des personnes ayant des incapacités
Published on Wednesday, June 14, 2023
Abstract

Argument
Taking advantage of the opportunity provided by the organisation and staging of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris in 2024, this issue of the journal Aequitas wishes to take a close look at the developments that affect both high-level competitive sport and the various forms of sport, physical or motor leisure activities for people with disabilities. So, what about the transformation of the view of social participation through the participation of sportsmen and women in the international field of para-sport, in that of sport for all specific, particular or vulnerable publics, of handisport and adapted sport or even of shared, collaborative or participative sport in particular institutions? The question of participation in sport, which now appears less as a question of education, rehabilitation or even health than as a question of law, echoes that of the visibility of people with disabilities in sport.
In this context, we can ask ourselves the following questions, among others. What is the relationship between the object of study and the concept of social participation? Is it at the heart of the problem or at its periphery? Was it historically and why is it no longer so? Or, on the contrary, is it currently becoming so and by what means? What are the obstacles to greater social participation or greater participation in sport today for these populations or audiences that are sometimes historically excluded? What are they? How can this social participation be even more effective tomorrow? More collaborative too? More participatory? Under what conditions? Can it become or should it become once again the focus of high-level sport authorities in the context of the Paris Games in 2024, but also in re-educational practices, educational practices at school, leisure sports practices, at work, in the family, in everyday life, etc.
More precisely, what forms does this social participation take today in different geographical areas such as Quebec or France or elsewhere, at the level of the different institutions that organise sport in these territories? How is this social participation conceived by decision-makers, designed by public policies, implemented by operators and experienced by sport actors? What are the stumbling blocks and friction points that remain between the different parties? What is the situation, for example, regarding the introduction of new physical or sporting practices in major competitions or universal access to a diversified range of sporting activities in order to create a community?
In order to try to provide answers to these different questions, the proposed articles will be based on multiple fields of investigation, taking an interest in both micro cases and meso, political or economic issues, and mobilising theoretical frameworks from historical, anthropological, sociological, geographical, legal, economic and political approaches, etc., with a view to grasping the situations studied and the words of the actors collected.
We would therefore like to open this issue to researchers from all backgrounds and disciplines: sports science/STAPS, education science, history, sociology, political science, etc., but also to professionals and people with disabilities who are confronted with these issues.
