L’UCLouvain recrute un·e doctorant·e en philosophie ou en histoire de la philosophie. L’objectif principal de ce projet est de comparer la philosophie moderne de la Bildung et le paradigme contemporain de la Learning Society en analysant systématiquement leurs structures homologiques. Par cette comparaison, nous cherchons à exposer les mutations conceptuelles qui ont opéré, d’un paradigme à l’autre, sur l’idéal de l’autonomie éducative.

The UCLouvain offers a PhD fellowship in Philosophy, History of Philosophy. The main objective of this project is to compare the modern philosophy of Bildung and the contemporary paradigm of the Learning Society (LS) by systematically analyzing their homological structures. Through this comparison, we aim to expose the important conceptual mutations of the ideal of educational autonomy occurring from the first paradigm to the latter.

Projet de recherche

L’objectif principal de ce projet est de comparer la philosophie moderne de la Bildung et le paradigme contemporain de la Learning Society en analysant systématiquement leurs structures homologiques. Par cette comparaison, nous cherchons à exposer les mutations conceptuelles qui ont opéré, d’un paradigme à l’autre, sur l’idéal de l’autonomie éducative.

Sur le plan disciplinaire, ce projet se situe à l’intersection de l’histoire de la philosophie moderne et de la philosophie politique contemporaine. Il se structure en quatre grands axes :

1. Reconstruction historique des textes consacrés au concept de Bildung dans la philosophie classique allemande, par l’établissement d’une typologie originale des positions contrastées des principaux auteurs de cette époque (Herder, Mendelssohn, Kant, Fichte, Schiller, Goethe, Schelling, Hegel, Humboldt), en fonction de la manière dont ils conceptualisent la dialectique de l’autonomie éducative et, en particulier, la façon dont ils théorisent les missions politiques et culturelles de l’Université dans leurs conceptions du projet émancipateur de la Bildung.
2. Identification et analyse des interprétations, critiques et transformations les plus significatives du concept de Bildung chez Marx (allseitige Verwirklichung), Mill (self-development), Nietzsche (Zucht) and Dewey (growth), pour mettre en lumière les principales divergences théoriques sur les conditions d’une réactivation partielle du projet moderne émancipateur de la Bildung.
3. Constitution d’un corpus de textes et discours scientifiques et politiques sur la Learning Society, en vue de restituer la philosophie politique sous-jacente à ceux-ci et de la comparer à la philosophie de la Bildung en suivant une grille d’analyse identifiant les homologies et mutations conceptuelles et normatives entre les deux paradigmes.
4. Mise à l’épreuve de la pertinence concrète de cette comparaison et du potentiel critique de la Bildung dans le contexte des mutations contemporaines de l’Idée d’Université, en cartographiant les critiques philosophiques les plus importantes de ses mutations et des conceptions et théorisations philosophiques de la liberté académique.

À travers une analyse des deux paradigmes politico-éducatifs de la Bildung et de la Learning Society, nous chercherons à examiner si le grand narratif de la modernité philosophique qu’est l’idéal d’émancipation par l’auto-formation est devenu tout à fait obsolète et impuissant aujourd’hui dans le contexte de l’économie de la connaissance, ou si, et dans quelle mesure, il continue d’être opérant dans les discours actuels, sous des formes critiques et fragmentaires.

Mission et activités

• La candidate ou le candidat sera amené·e à contribuer à l’avancée du projet de recherche dans le premier des quatre axes présentés ci-dessus, en collaboration avec le porteur du projet, Quentin Landenne (FNRS/USL-B). Cela pourra impliquer, outre la rédaction d’articles scientifiques en lien avec le projet, la réalisation d’une revue de la littérature sur l’axe pris en charge et la co-organisation d’évènements scientifiques.
• Il ou elle aura également l’occasion de participer aux activités de recherche du Centre Prospéro. Pour cette raison, pouvoir communiquer activement en français constitue un atout important. Il sera en outre demandé au candidat ou à la candidate retenu·e de s’installer en Belgique pendant la durée du contrat.

Presentation of the projet

The main objective of this project is to compare the modern philosophy of Bildung and the contemporary paradigm of the Learning Society (LS) by systematically analyzing their homological structures. Through this comparison, we aim to expose the important conceptual mutations of the ideal of educational autonomy occurring from the first paradigm to the latter.

This research combines history of philosophy and political philosophy and will follow a plan in four axes:

1. Historical reconstruction of the texts formed around the concept of Bildung in classical German philosophy, through an original typology of the various and contrasting positions of the main authors of this period (Herder, Mendelssohn, Kant, Fichte, Schiller, Goethe, Schelling, Hegel, Humboldt), according to how they conceptualize the dialectics of educational autonomy and, in particular, how they theorize the political and cultural missions of the University in their conceptions of the emancipating project of the Bildung.
2. Identification and analysis of the most significant critical transformations of the Bildung concept by Marx (allseitige Verwirklichung), Mill (self-development), Nietzsche (Zucht) and Dewey (growth), in order to bring to light the main theoretical divergences concerning the conditions of a partial reactivation and actualization of the modern emancipating project of the Bildung.
3. Establishing a corpus of scientific and political texts and discourses on the LS, in order to provide a theoretical reconstruction of the underlying political philosophy of these discourses and to compare the paradigm of LS to the modern philosophy of Bildung following an analytical grid pointing out the conceptual and normative homologies and mutations between them
4. Testing the concrete relevance of this systematic comparison and of the heuristic potential of the Bildung philosophy in the context of the current mutations of the Idea of University, by mapping the most important philosophical critiques of these mutations and by proposing a philosophical reconstruction of the concept of academic freedom in the light of the Bildung constellation first, and then from the various normative points of view underlying the critiques of Bildung and LS.

Through an analysis of political-educational narratives, we want to examine if the great narratives of the philosophical modernity – such as emancipation through self-cultivation – have become totally obsolete or ineffective, or if and how far they continue to be operating in current discourses under critical and fragmented forms.

Mission and activities

• The candidate will contribute to the advancement of the ERC research project in first axis presented above, in collaboration with the project leader, Quentin Landenne (FNRS/USL-B). This may involve, in addition to the writing of scientific articles related to the project, the realization of a literature review on the axis in charge and the co-organization of scientific events.
• She or he will have the opportunity to participate in the research activities of the Centre Prospéro. For this reason, the ability to communicate actively in French is an important asset. The successful candidate will also be asked to live in Belgium for the duration of the contract.
