Announcement

Special issue of the Forma y Funcion Journal.

Argument

As a linguistic discipline, Dialectology is currently experiencing a renewal and displays such vitality that contrasts with those claims about its alleged decease, which widely circulated among scholars at the end of the twentieth century. Evidence of the current propitious environment for dialectological studies is provided by recent publications, such as The Handbook of Dialectology, published in 2017 by Wiley-Blackwell Publishers, or the recently published Dialectología hispánica / The Routledge Handbook of Spanish Dialectology, 2023.

The revitalization of dialectology is based on a scientific approach, in which dialectology as a basic discipline dialogues with other research areas both from a synchronic point of view and a historical dimension. At present, progress in the analysis of variation results from the incorporation of research perspectives and methodologies, such as corpus linguistics, perceptual dialectology, contact linguistics, pragmatics, or the study of regional variation, a recently developed discipline which focuses on the contrastive study of language used by socially and culturally marked speech communities.

This monographic issue intends, from an interdisciplinary perspective, to complete and complement the dialectological research with inquiries carried out in Spanish-speaking countries, especially in the Americas, a territory that concentrates the largest number of speakers and varieties of Spanish in the world.
