Abstract

Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology spontaneously evolves in the direction of an ontology, and on several occasions this ontology takes the form of a materialism. Many impulses exert their pressure on the trajectory of Merleau-Ponty’s thought. The Marxism with which he is confronted in the 1950s, the philosophies of nature that converge in his last courses, the great Husserlian theme of the body that explodes in The Visible and the Invisible in an ontology of the flesh. The spectrum of Merleauponty’s materialisms is thus irreducible to any preconceived paradigm and is always intimately embedded in the singular elaborations in which Merleau-Ponty is engaged.

Argument

Rather than a materialist philosophy, we should record in Merleau-Ponty’s late work an overall materialist concern, which we would like first of all like to map out.  Secondly, it is significant that this materialist concern is evident not only in Merleau-Ponty but far beyond Merleau-Ponty, in his multiple interlocutions with his contemporary materialisms and in the multiple interlocutions that our contemporaries have with Merleau-Ponty’s thought. We could say that the many faces of contemporary materialisms tend to have a kind of Merleaupontyan imprinting, insofar as they tend to think beyond the form/matter dualism, to see matter as a terrain of universal animation, to make matter a living and processual being, to resolve matter in a perennial morphogenetic tension.  This is to say, thirdly, that contemporary matter is a kind of universal psychic life, although not anthropomorphic or even zoomorphic. Materialism, we might say in a formula, as a new animism, or animism as an ancient concern that pushes us to the threshold of a new family of materialisms.
