For a History of University Settings in Quebec (19th-20th centuries)
Pour une histoire des milieux universitaires au Québec (XIXe-XXe siècles)
Published on Monday, December 18, 2023
Abstract
This call for papers is a continuation of the panel “Un renouveau de l’histoire des milieux universitaires au Québec ? Trajectoires inédites et mobilisations des savoirs”, which was organised as part of the annual conference of the Institut d’histoire de l’Amérique française. The call is for a thematic issue to be published in Revue d’histoire de l’éducation / Historical Studies in Education in spring 2025. It aims at bringing together current research on the history of universities (French- and English-speaking) in Quebec in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries in order to connect different approaches and objects, while also demonstrating the relevance of considering universities as orbital centres, both practically and heuristically, for future research.

Arguments
In Quebec historiography, the history of university settings has never constituted a field of research in its own right. In this respect, it lags behind other historiographies - European and American, of course, but also Canadian, where such a field has developed, notably around the pioneering work of Paul Axelrod.
Despite the absence of a research field, many researchers in Quebec have taken an interest in one aspect or another of the history of university settings - a term we prefer to that of university history, since it invites us to go beyond a purely institutional or official history. Institutional or official approaches serve senior administration interests, are narrowly focussed (on research, teaching and university management sites) and often adopting a commemorative or teleological perspective. Considered from many different perspectives, the history of university settings is broader. It encourages us to relate these environments to, or place them in tension with, other spaces (urban, regional, national, international) and other actors (governments, groups, professions, businesses, media), or to examine how university environments, considered as laboratories (scientific, social, cultural, political, artistic, etc.) reflect, delay, or prepare for broader transformations in their communities.
Since the late 1990s, there has been a real dynamism in research into the history of university settings in Quebec. Historians, as well as researchers from other disciplines, have worked on a wide range of subjects, sometimes directly and sometimes indirectly, including funding policies, student activism, pedagogical experimentation, academic cultures, cultural diplomacy, public attitudes toward the university, the evolution of science infrastructure, inter-university comparisons, study trips, universities as urban spaces, the role of universities in the construction of national narratives, the democratization of access to higher education, sexism on campus, anti-Semitism, the consolidation of professions, freedom of expression, the pressures of the knowledge economy, architectural symbolism, religious heritage and interculturalism on campus, to name a few.
This thematic issue, to be published in Revue d'histoire de l'éducation / Historical Studies in Education in Spring 2025, aims to bring together current research on the history of university settings (French- and English-speaking) in Quebec during the 19th and 20th centuries, in order to relate different approaches and objectives, while demonstrating the relevance of giving university settings a central place, both practically and heuristically, in future research.
