Abstract

The populations of Small Island Developing States (SIDS), much more than those of other continental countries, are facing crises of different natures which threaten their ability to meet their basic food needs much more than other continental countries. In the intention to resolve these problems, several national and international actors have tried to combine their efforts in order to intervene, through different programs and projects, aimed at acting on the food and agricultural systems. These actions, as desirable as they may be, are not without undesirable costs for the environment. Some of these costs are detrimental to the sustainability of these systems. Thus, scientific and even philosophical reflections are necessary to address these questions.

Argument

The populations of Small Island Developing States (SIDS), much more than those of other continental countries, are facing crises of different natures which threaten their ability to meet their basic food needs much more than other continental countries. In some cases, food insecurity arises from other crises such as those related to climate change, violence and security, environment, etc. These food problems hinder the achievement of most of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to which these countries committed in September 2015.

In this special issue of the journal Études caribéennes, the guest editors invite scientists, practitioners and philosophers to contribute to reflections aimed at advancing collective understanding on these essential issues for populations and economic development in SIDS. Contributions on innovations and strategies that can help overcome crises and move closer to the SDGs are requested.

The questions to be addressed are multiple: can or should varietal selection and improvement efforts aimed at adapting crops to the aggravating effects of climate change include efforts to preserve biodiversity? Are innovations aimed at increasing yields the main concern of farmers? Are those innovations driven by market logic or food self-sufficiency? How can we respond to the challenge of feeding a growing and increasingly urbanized population? Should agriculture be developed inside or on the outskirts of cities? How can interventions in the agricultural sector preserve the environment and the sustainability of food systems? Is the (capitalist) logic of the market compatible with agroecology, which obviously seems more appropriate to the mountainous configuration of Haiti and other countries in the region? etc. This special issue on agriculture and the environment seeks to bring out empirical analyzes as well as (practical) proposals for more reasoned future interventions.

If this issue mainly focuses on SIDS with a particular focus on Haiti, all articles with an empirical basis from other countries and regions will also be accepted. The approach may be multidisciplinary encompassing economics, management, sociology, geography, environment, town planning, ethnology, anthropology, politics, philosophy, history, etc. Any original contribution will be analyzed without disciplinary discrimination.

Papers may address the following topics

This is not an exhaustive list:

  1. Agricultural and agri-food innovations in the face of crises (climate change in particular);
  2. Problem-solving strategies in food systems;
  3. The environmental costs of interventions in the agricultural sector;
  4. The sustainability challenges of food systems;
  5. Food crises and ways to resolve them in SIDS;
  6. Evaluation of government responses and international initiatives in terms of agricultural and food policies in the face of global crises;
  7. Role of smallholder farmers and agricultural practices in the resilience of local/territorial food systems;
  8. Analysis of alternative economic models in agriculture: fair trade, short circuits, contract farming, etc. and their impact on sustainability.
  9. The new dynamics underlying food insecurity.

The journal accepts original contributions in French, English, Spanish and Haitian Creole. Abstracts of accepted papers will be translated into Haitian Creole.

The journal only accepts original, unpublished articles that have not been submitted to another journal.
