Abstract

2024 marks the 750th anniversary of the death of both Bonaventure of Bagnoregio and Thomas Aquinas. To commemorate the occasion, the Centre of Philosophy of the University of Lisbon (CFUL), in partnership with the Center for Classical Studies of the same University (CEC) and the Society for the European History of Ideas (SEHI), is organizing a colloquium, which will take place between 9th and the 11th of October, 2024. The aim of the colloquium is to contribute to the renewal of the studies on these two prominent philosophers of the 13th century.

Presentation

2024 marks the 750th anniversary of the death of both Bonaventure of Bagnoregio and Thomas Aquinas. To commemorate the occasion, the Centre of Philosophy of the University of Lisbon (CFUL), in partnership with the Center for Classical Studies of the same University (CEC) and the Society for the European History of Ideas (SEHI), is organizing a colloquium, which will take place between 9th and the 11th of October, 2024. The aim of the colloquium is to contribute to the renewal of the studies on these two prominent philosophers of the 13th century. 

To this end, the organizers invite the submission of conference abstracts and panel proposals on one of the following topics: 

  1. The philosophy of Bonaventure
  2. The philosophy of Thomas Aquinas
  3. Comparative studies between Bonaventure and Thomas Aquinas
  4. The influences of and on Bonaventure and/or Thomas Aquinas
  5. Bonaventure and/or Thomas Aquinas and the universities of the 13th century
  6. The presence of Bonaventure and/or Thomas Aquinas in present-day philosophy

The abstracts submitted, as well as the panel proposals submitted, must demonstrate the innovative nature of the research to be presented.

Submission guidelines

All talks will have a maximum duration of 30 minutes, followed by a 15-minute discussion.

Submission of individual abstracts

All those who are interested in giving a paper are warmly invited to submit a proposal

by March 28, 2024.

Submissions should contain the title of the presentation, an abstract of no more than 500 words, as well as the author’s name, affiliation, and email. In order to submit your proposal, please fill in this formhttps://forms.gle/UeirCYRs99dLZWqDA.

Submission of panels

All those interested in organizing a panel at the conference should send a brief description of the panel of no more than 500 words, along with its title and the name(s) and email address(es) of the contact person(s), through this formhttps://forms.gle/rHDwQsDAR4yFNSHTA. Also, panel organizers must request all speakers within the panel to submit their abstract, through this form (https://forms.gle/pJrE9gt3R6JGXyrB6), indicating the title of the panel. Panel proposals, and their respective individual abstracts,

are due by April 26, 2024.

Languages and Publications

The languages of the conference will be English, Portuguese, Italian, Spanish, and French. Papers written based on presentations in English will be considered for publication in the next volume of the Proceedings of SEHI, in the series Historical-Analytical Studies on Nature, Mind and Action published by Springer (https://www.springer.com/series/11934). Papers based on presentations in the other languages will be considered for publication in Philosophica: International Journal for the History of Philosophy(https://www.pdcnet.org/pdc/bvdb.nsf/journal?openform&journal=pdc_philosophica). Papers submitted for publication will undergo the regular peer-review procedures.
