Ce nouveau séminaire en ligne, transversal et inter-laboratoires, sur la vie politique aux États-Unis vise à rassembler les chercheurs spécialistes de la politique contemporaine aux États-Unis. Il se définit ainsi comme un lieu d’échange entre collègues – français, américains et européens – pour présenter les travaux achevés ou en cours sur les institutions, les élections, les partis politiques, les politiques publiques, l’économie politique, la sociologie électorale et les mouvements sociaux, le droit constitutionnel, les idéologies et l’histoire des idées, la politique étrangère et l’histoire politique en général dans la mesure où elle éclaire les développements contemporains.

15 mai. The Catholic challenge to liberalism in the United States

Marie Gayte-Lebrun est maîtresse de conférences en civilisation des États-Unis à l’Université de Toulon, membre du laboratoire Babel.

Depuis une dizaine d'année, un certain nombre d'intellectuels catholiques aux Etats-Unis ont multiplié les attaques contre les principes du libéralisme, fondation même des Etats-Unis, qu'ils accusent d'avoir amené à une quête sans fin de nouveaux droits et à la relégation de la religion à la sphère privée. Ce séminaire examinera les différentes solutions qu'ils proposent pour enrayer ce qu'ils voient comme le déclin moral américain, de la reconstruction de solides communautés religieuses au niveau local jusqu'à "l'intégration" de l'Etat et de l'Eglise catholique.

For the past ten years, a number of Catholic intellectuals in the United States have been lamenting the failings of their country. Liberalism, which they consider the founding philosophy of the United States and which they define as a never ending quest for rights and a relegation of religion to the private sphere, is to blame for the decline of intermediary structures such as church and family, a rampant consumerism harmful to the environment, and the worsening economic status of the working class. While these thinkers largely agree on the state of the country and what led to it, they do not all agree on the solutions needed to respond to what they see as a crisis of American civilization. Some promote the building of strong religious communities at the local level to eventually rebuild society from the ground up ; others make more immediately political proposals, with some going as far as suggesting an “integration” of state and (Catholic) Church. Far from being niche, this conversation has expanded into the broader public debate in the aftermath of the Trump election and is part of a wider challenge to the postwar liberal consensus. My presentation, based on fieldwork conducted in the US in the first half of 2023, will attempt to chart these new “Catholic” postliberal ideas, show that they are part of an older but oft forgotten conversation, and try to determine how likely they are to promote greater religious engagement with American society and policymaking.
