Presentation

The ARCHIVO Visiting Researcher Program is an annual initiative fostered within the Archivo International Network for Photography and Visual Culture. It is an online, unpaid collaboration open to scholars at any stage of their careers, as well as practitioners and other professionals in the field of visual culture. Applicants are welcome to join the network as visiting researchers within the Archivo Research Network 2025 themed programme.

A Visiting Researcher should already be engaged in academic research.

Prospective Visiting Researchers should align their proposals with the theme of the Archivo program for 2025, and actively participate in the annual themed program by sharing their research through our activities, which may include public events, group sessions, and talk series.

They are expected to attend and actively participate in program events and initiatives, contributing to the expansion of the platform's open-access content related to the annual thematic line of research.

The Visiting Researchers' program 2025 seeks to investigate archival practices in visual arts by inviting proposals that examine various approaches to the archive as both a structural model and a source of information for artistic, curatorial, and cultural practices, spanning from historical, political and cultural standpoints.

In this edition, we aim to explore contemporary archive-based visual arts and contemporary archival sources and collections, emphasising critical approaches and case studies that interrogate established notions of archival documents as static sources of knowledge, testing innovative methodologies for experimenting with and producing meaning within archival imagery and its various forms of appropriation within art and visual studies.

Collaboration period

Selected candidates will engage in a one-year collaboration (Jan-Dec 2025) with the Archivo Research Network, becoming part of an interdisciplinary group of scholars and practitioners.

Acess to resources

Visiting Researchers will have access to the Archivo Media Archive, and free registration to the online events included in the year's program.

Selected candidates will have free access to the platform's resources, similar to all network members and subscribers. However, the primary purpose of the collaboration is the active contribution to our research initiatives (webinar series, essay writing, and reading group sessions, as presented in our website).
