Abstract

Deciphering God’s historical plan for humanity is a task to be taken up again and again. More than ten years after his last book (Le Christianisme comme religion de l'Évangile), we want to pay tribute to Claude Geffré by exploring the new directions taken by theological research on the subjects and themes that he himself worked on. Papers will be presented over four half-days.

Argument

On March 28 and 29, 2025, the journal Revue des Sciences philosophiques et théologiques, the Centre d’études du Saulchoir (Paris), and the Centre for Institutional Studies of the Dominican Province of France (Lyon) are pooling their resources to stage an international French-language symposium on the figure of Claude Geffré (1926-2017), who constantly sought to understand the theologian’s task as deciphering God’s historical project for humanity.

A witness to the theological shifts that took place at Vatican II, Claude Geffré was the cautious yet bold architect of the transition from a dogmatic to a hermeneutical method of reflection on faith. Theology becomes an interpretation, a deciphering of the meaning of the Word of God in relation to historical experience. Since the multiplicity of religious traditions is an element of this experience, Claude Geffré has been developing a theology of religious pluralism, beginning 1985, which remains an essential reference for understanding the challenges of the encounter between the great religions.

He taught at the Facultés du Saulchoir from 1957 to 1968, where he was Regent of Studies from 1965, the year he joined the board of directors of the journal Concilium. In 1968, thanks to the confidence of the future Cardinal Jean Daniélou, he was appointed ordinary professor of the faculty of theology in Paris, soon replacing Henri Bouillard in the chair of fundamental theology. He directed the Cogitatio fidei collection (1970-2004) at Éditions du Cerf. In 1985, he was also asked to teach a course in the theology of religions at the Institut de théologie et de sciences des religions de l’Institut catholique in Paris. Member since 1975 of the Group for Islamic-Christian Research, he has forged friendships with Muslim intellectuals, including Mohammed Arkoun, and was also involved in setting up the French section of the World Conference of Religions for Peace. Finally, as Director of the École Biblique et Archéologique Française in Jerusalem from 1996 to 1999, he had the opportunity to meditate on the mystery of the three monotheistic religions.

Deciphering God’s historical plan for humanity is a task to be taken up again and again.
