Abstract

“Is there a need for a new environmental ethic?” asks the article by the Australian philosopher Richard Routley. This statement, rooted in the inaugural reflections of Aldo Leopold in 1973, signifies the starting point of a new philosophical and moral exploration of the natural environment. This emerging field of applied ethics gains traction in social, political, legal, and international debates, compelling an increasing demand for philosophical insights. It challenges established relationships with the natural, material, cultural, and animal realms, prompting a call for a fundamental reconfiguration of our politics, institutions, justice systems, ethics, and our understanding of the subject. The primary object of this special issue is to spotlight the ongoing philosophical reflections on the environmental crisis prevalent in the Anthropocene society.

"Is there a need for a new environmental ethic?" asks the article by the Australian philosopher Richard Routley.

Contributions focusing on the following key themes are welcomed:

  • Political Philosophy: The pressing and all-encompassing nature of the environmental crisis demands an inevitable reconsideration between nature and politics. This intrinsic correspondence introduces tensions in current political organizational structures, leading to critical questions such as the need for a new social contract, strategies for establishing governance frameworks infused with ecological awareness, the reshaping of current geopolitics, and the redefinition of the boundaries of political agency in light of the environmental crisis.
  • Animal Ethics: A discernible convergence exists between the imperative to protect nature and that of non-human animals. Safeguarding both spaces and animal populations prompts a reconsideration of our moral criteria, demanding a new perspective on the emotional, material, political, and instrumental relationships that have evolved over time between humans and animals.
  • Phenomenology: The potential of phenomenology in addressing the ethical and existential challenges posed by the environmental crisis, offers a valuable and renewed area for the reflection involving the natural milieus we This exploration seeks to illuminate the relationship between humans and the material spaces they inhabit. It demands a reconsideration in various aspects, including the temporal, bodily, and communal dimensions, as we grapple with novel ways of understanding our relationships with the environments in which we settle.
  • Environmental Justice: Acknowledging the imperative for a reconfiguration of our engagement with the environment from ethical and political perspectives, underscores the indispensability of justice. This involves global, interspecific, and intergenerational considerations. Establishing a new common environment, coupled with equitable access to resources, needs of renewed legal foundations to foster a society that is both responsible and respectful toward natural environments.

Alternative suggestions related to other areas within environmental philosophy will also be considered, as long as they align with the scope of the Síntesis journal.
