Each year, the IReMus Sorbonne Université - International Doctoral Congress of Music and Musicology presents the latest musicological research by young scholars from around the world. The congress, organized by the BJC, gives young researchers in musicology an opportunity to present their research to a wider audience. In doing so it aims to:
- encourage exchange between early career researchers from different backgrounds;
- promote dialogue between doctoral students and established researchers;
- raise awareness around current scientific issues through collaborative workshops;
- and foster ongoing development in musicological research.The congress is open to all doctoral students in the field, regardless of their laboratory or university affiliation. Submissions from a broad range of disciplinary perspectives are welcomed.
This year, the theme of the Doctoral Congress considers the relationship between music and writing in its many forms. Possible topics include, but are not limited to:
- Writing and orality
- Various forms of notation
- Musical aesthetics
- Contexts and pretexts of musical compositions
- Interpretation
- Improvisation
- adapting music to a written form for research and analysis
Approaches incorporating musical practice are also welcome. Presentations may include a musical performance, subject to availability of musical instrument(s) required (please specify your requirements in your application).
Each year, the congress brings together around twenty doctoral students, researcher-educators and specialists to discuss topics and methodologies representing current trends in the discipline. This year we welcome:
- Hélène Sechehaye (ethnomusicologist, Université Libre de Bruxelles)
- Paweł Gancarczyk (musicologist, Institute of Art, Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw)
Submission guidelines
