Abstract

Ce colloque a pour objectif de réunir des enseignants et enseignantes de langue et de traduction, des traducteurs et traductrices, des chercheurs, des étudiants et étudiantes en langues et en traduction, des spécialistes de traductologie et sciences de l’éducation, ainsi que toute personne ayant un intérêt pour l’enseignement, les langues et la traduction, afin de réfléchir aux dynamiques créées par les interactions entre ces trois domaines.

Argument

The aim of this conference is to create a platform where translation and language teachers, translators, researchers, students of languages and of translation, specialists in translation studies and in education, and anyone who is interested in pedagogy, in language and in translation, can reflect together on the interfaces between the three key words in the title.

Translation and language teaching, surprisingly (at first sight) called “strange bedfellows” by Carreres (2006), have a long history together, perhaps as long as the existence of either of them. Indeed, how can one possibly translate if they have not learned a second language? And how can one learn a language other than their mother tongue without translation somehow making its necessity felt, one way or another whether the process of language learning takes place in an informal setting, or within an educational setting. With respect to the latter, one question which has already made the object of study is that of translation as means and translation as an end in itself (e.g., Carreres 2014). Cook (2010), for instance, sees translation as a valuable aid to language acquisition and evaluation, which also has the benefit of enabling students to relate the language they are learning to their own mother tongue. There is a cultural dimension to this, and translation finds itself in its natural role as go-between and negotiator.

Building on existing work (e.g., Lavault 1985, Danan 1992, Delisle and Lee-Jahnke 1998, Malmkjær 1998 and 2004, Gile 2005, Gambier 2007, Cook 2010, Carreres 2006 and 2014, Leonardi 2010, Koletnik and Frœliger 2019), we would like to continue the dialogue and invite proposals on aspects of the interrelationships between translation, language(s) and teaching. We welcome proposals involving any languages, language combinations, and time periods, on the following topics (the list is not restrictive):

  • the history and methodology of translation for language teaching, and of the teaching of
  • languages for the purpose of training translators;
  • curriculum design and testing (within a university context and also in secondary education);
  • linguistic approaches to translation teaching (e.g., discourse analysis);
  • current developments in technology, especially AI, and their impact on translation and
  • language teaching and assessment;
  • corpora (including audiovisual) in the teaching of languages and of translation;
  • the language teacher as translator, the translation trainer as language teacher;
  • methods for teaching translation in a way that is sensitive to the specificities of languages
  • and of language pairs;
  • self-translation and language teaching;
  • teaching languages and translation with a variety of text types and genres;
  • multilingualism / translation / teaching.

Please send 300 to 350-word abstracts accompanied by a bionote of about 100 words to elisavet.hatzidaki@univ-montp3.fr

Registration fee: 90 euros. Student rate: 45 euros
