Abstract

“Ciak… Action, and History !” is a section of the Open Access journal Diacronie. Studi di Storia Contemporanea. The section publishes contributions investigating the relationship between history and audiovisual materials and archives and welcomes interdisciplinary approaches. The use of audiovisual materials allow historians to enrich the possible array of primary and secondary sources. Moreover, audiovisual sources are also active agents able to affect the perception of specific events, collective imaginaries, public memories, and group identity. Also from pedagogical and outreaching perspectives, audiovisual media are gaining momentum. We are interested in articles exploring interactions between history and audiovisual products.

Argument

Ciak…Action, and History! is a section of the Open Access journal “Diacronie. Studi di Storia Contemporanea.” The section publishes contributions investigating the relationship between history and audiovisual materials and archives and welcomes interdisciplinary approaches.

Over the last decades, historians have explored the enriching and complex dialogue between audiovisual media and historical reconstructions. In addition to that, the increase in broadcasts of historic events and the growing presence of historical debates and dissemination on television, press, and social media demonstrate both the interest for the subject, and a rising demand of historical information by the public at large. Movies and tv series, television programmes, YouTube channels, podcasts and video-lectures – disseminated also via social media, – have proposed engaging narratives to deliver historical content and have proved themselves to be effective.

Articles may be about (however, the list is not exhaustive):

  • theoretical, conceptual, and methodological reflections on audiovisual materials as historic sources, dissemination media, pedagogical tools in history courses;
  • popularising historical knowledge via cultural and entertainment products;
  • cherry-picking practices, falsification or distortion of the historical evidence;
  • comparison between storytelling and history narrating;
  • studies on consumption of history-themed audiovisual products and their impact on the audience;
  • audiovisual materials in public and digital history;
  • audiovisual archives and upcycling of audiovisual documents in media.
