Research fields

The Laboratory on Digital Textualities (Université de Montréal) and the Groupe de recherche sur les éditions critiques en contexte numérique (GREN) are offering three doctoral contracts each amounting to $35,000 CAD per year for 4 years. The research will be conducted as part of a PhD program (Digital Humanities option) at Université de Montréal (PhD in French Literature, PhD in Literature, or PhD in Applied Human Sciences). Candidates will work 4 days a week as members the following two research teams: Revue3.0 SSHRC partnership project and the GREN, at the Centre de recherche interuniversitaire sur les humanités numériques.

Selected candidates will propose a doctoral project within the field of Digital Humanities related to one of the themes described in the profiles below.

Profile No. 1: The Future of Scholarly Journals

As part of the Revue3.0 SSHRC partnership, this doctoral contract is aimed at thesis projects that explore the future of scholarly journals and scientific production. The material forms of writing as well as knowledge transmission and appropriation play a central role in defining these dynamics, concerning in particular the legitimization of knowledge and determination of epistemological models supported by the journals and their communities.

Approaches based on media studies, digital world philosophy, book history, scientific journals history or theories from new materialism and critical code studies (non-exhaustive list) are particularly appreciated. Technical knowledge related to Digital Humanities (digital publishing, programming languages, web technologies, etc.) is an asset.

Profile No. 2: Digital Publishing: Theoretical and Technical Issues

The digital environments of today host most of our cultural and scientific activities. Within the Humanities, these environments pave the way for digital approaches based on semantic enrichment and computational text analysis. We are interested in the dialogue between these innovations and the epistemological and conceptual heritage of the human sciences.

This doctoral contract is intended for digital publishing projects or projects exploring other digital forms of knowledge production, in both cases accompanied by a reflection on the role played by digital environments in generating knowledge. Basic digital literacy and knowledge of the main technologies used in digital scholarly publishing (OCR, HTR, digital editorial chains, XML, XML-TEI, stylometric and lexicometric tools, etc.) are assets for this position.

Profile No. 3: The Greek Anthology in the Digital Age

Digital environments and technologies restructure and redefine our relationship to classical texts. This doctoral project is inscribed within this context and is intended for candidates who possess expertise in Helennic studies / or digital classicists that are prepared to seize the collaborative critical edition project of the Greek Anthology.

The principal avenue of research conducted within this project consists in the exploration of the technical, theoretical and collaborative dimensions of the Greek Anthology. The candidates will define their own research axis for the purpose of bringing new insights to the Greek Anthology, whilst enriching the existing project.

Research topics may include : a reflection surrounding digital publishing tools and devices in philology, collaborative editorial dynamics, encoding standards and data modeling to ensure interoperability, as well as potentialities of artificial intelligence in this field of study.
