Abstract
This year, as part of the 2025 edition of the Synoikismos Interuniversity Doctoral Seminar, the annual theme days are intended as a space for dialogue open to all researchers working on Antiquity, regardless of discipline or perspective. The proposed themes - governance, economy and society - do not constitute closed axes. They are intended to provide a sufficiently broad framework for a wide range of research, whether political, social, economic, cultural or methodological.

Presentation
This year, as part of the 2025 edition of the Synoikismos inter-university doctoral seminar, the annual thematic days will be held on 15-16 May 2025 at UCLouvain (Belgium). These days are intended to provide a forum for dialogue open to all researchers working on Antiquity, regardless of the disciplines or perspectives adopted. The proposed themes - governance, economy and society - are not closed. They are intended to provide a sufficiently broad framework to accommodate diverse research, whether of a political, social, economic, cultural or methodological nature. This conference aims to bring together a varied scientific community, exploring both local studies and cross-disciplinary approaches. We encourage proposals on a variety of themes, such as:
- analysis of political institutions and modes of governance;
- trade, production and local or global economies;
- social structures, cultural practices or artistic expressions ;
- literary representations in Antiquity as a mirror and fabric of the ancient world
- methodological aspects in the study of Antiquity.
- etc.
Interactions between these themes can be explored, but they are not a prerequisite. We favour a diversity of approaches and a wealth of individual perspectives.
Terms of submission
On this occasion, we are pleased to invite doctoral students and young researchers from Belgian or foreign universities whose research topic is in line with this theme to come and present their project. We therefore warmly encourage all interested doctoral students (at the beginning or end of their thesis) to submit a title, a summary (300 words max.) of the subject they wish to present and a brief CV (150 words max.) to the seminar address (seminar.synoikismos@gmail.com)
by 1st March 2025 at the latest.
Each presentation (in French or English) will be limited to 30 minutes.
Refund arrangements for participants
As part of these exchange days, we have arranged for travel expenses to be partially covered for communicators:
-
Participants residing in Belgium: a flat-rate compensation of up to €35 will be granted for transport costs.
-
Participants from other countries: a flat-rate compensation of up to €100 will be granted for transport costs.
Reimbursement will be made on presentation of the necessary supporting documents (travel tickets, invoices, etc.) and up to the amounts indicated. The practical arrangements for submitting documents will be specified at a later date.
We hope this will make it easier for you to attend the conference. If you have any questions or require further information, please do not hesitate to contact us at seminar.synoikismos@gmail.com.
