ISSN 1123-7023 (online)

Cromohs: Cyber Review of Modern Historiography is a peer-reviewed, open-access inter-disciplinary annual journal published by Florence University Press. Cromohs acts as a focal point and forum for challenging and fresh scholarship on fourteenth- to nineteenth-century intellectual, social, and cultural history in a global perspective. It seeks to move beyond a strictly regional and Eurocentric approach, with a preferential view towards histories of trans-cultural contacts and connections. Cromohs features contributions engaging with extra-European cultures and societies, and theoretically informed work from a range of historical, cultural, and social domains that interrogate cross-cultural and connected histories, intersecting the history of knowledge, emotions, religious beliefs, ethnography, cartography, the environ-ment, material culture, and the arts.

Editors-in-chief

  • Daniel Barbu (Historiography of Religious Studies, CNRS Paris),
  • Caterina Bori (History of Pre-Modern Islam and Muslim Civilisation, University of Bologna),
  •  Giovanni Tarantino (Early Modern Intellectual History, University of Florence),
  •  Paola von Wyss-Giacosa (Anthropology and Material Culture Studies, University of Zurich).

Positions

Cromohs is seeking to fill three unpaid positions—Editorial Assistant, Book Reviews Editor, and Social Media Manager—offering valuable networking opportunities and insider insights into academic writing and publishing.

These roles might be especially suitable for early career scholars who would like some experience of working as part of a journal editorial team. However, we welcome expressions of interest from scholars at any career stage.

Editorial Assistant

The role is supported by our publishing team at Florence University Press and involves the preparation of manuscripts accepted for publication: managing the workflow of submissions through the journal’s online work platform (OJS 3.3); lay-outing; reviewing and editing articles and metadata prior to publication; proofreading; managing correspondences with authors.

Book Reviews Editor

The role involves identifying appropriate books and their reviewers, contacting publishers, supervising shipments of review copies. Working together with our Editorial Assistant(s), Book Reviews Editor(s) also manage the submission and publication of book reviews through the journal online work platform.

Social Media Manager

The role involves revamping and managing the journal’s social media accounts (Facebook and X). This includes programming recurring posts to enhance the journal’s reach and posting articles and calls upon publication. Working closely with the editors-in-chief, the Social Media Manager will also develop a cohesive strategy to engage with the academic community and promote the journal’s content effectively.

Time Commitment and Workload Expectations for Candidates

The workload varies depending on the role. Since Cromohs publishes one issue per year, Editorial Assistants are responsible for assisting with the publication of approximately 8 articles (10,000 words each) annually. Book Reviews Editors, on the other hand, oversee the coordination of around 10 book reviews per year (1,500 words each).

On average, managing a book review from start to finish requires about 5 hours, while handling an article takes approximately 15 hours. Both roles are shared between at least two individuals, ensuring that each person completes only half of the total workload over the course of a year. Consequently, the annual time commitment is approximately 25 hours for a Book Reviews Editor and 75 hours for an Editorial Assistant.

The Social Media Manager will be responsible for publishing three posts per month on each platform (Facebook and X) to promote the journal’s activities and engage with its audience. Given that each post across both platform is estimated to require 1.5 hours of work, the role entails an annual commitment of approximately 54 hours.

Candidates must commit to at least one full publication cycle (one year).

The roles of Editorial Assistants, Book Reviews Editors, and Social Media Manager do not involve any other specific scientific mission than those detailed in the roles’ descriptions above.
