Séminaire DATARights 2025

Access rights, Algorithmic transparency, and Data protection challenges

Droit d'accès, transparence algorithmique et enjeux de protection des données personnelles

Abstract

In the digital age, online platforms collect and exploit huge quantities of personal data, profoundly influencing social, economic and political dynamics. Yet their opaque operation limits access to the information essential for analyzing their mechanisms and measuring their impact. These infrastructures act like black boxes, making the study of their practices particularly complex. The DATARights seminar examines the right of access to personal data as a lever for transparency, particularly in the context of scientific research. Through several sessions in French and English, it will bring together researchers and experts from various disciplines to examine the concrete uses of this right, its limits and the challenges linked to its collective exercise in the face of algorithmic and data governance issues.

Presentation

Digital platforms have become essential infrastructures that shape our interactions, decisions and access to information.  However, their functioning relies on opaque algorithms and the massive collection of personal data, creating power asymmetries at the heart of surveillance capitalism.

Faced with these challenges, the DATARights project, funded by the French National Research Agency, explores how the right of access to personal data (notably via Article 15 of the GDPR) can be used collectively to reduce this opacity and foster algorithmic transparency.

This seminar proposes to examine this approach by bringing together researchers and experts from various disciplines - law, IT, sociology, political science - around the following themes :

  • Access rights as a tool for investigating and controlling platforms
  • Methodological and legal obstacles to data access
  • Tensions between individual protection and collective interests
  • Prospects for more transparent governance of digital systems

With sessions held in both French and English, the seminar is open to the public and accessible both in-class and online.

Seminar funded by the French National Research Agency - Project ANR JCJC DATARights.
