Presentation

Archivo Papers is a peer-reviewed journal dedicated to the study of photography, visual archival practices, and their intersections with visual culture. Founded in 2021, it explores both historical and contemporary perspectives on photography within broader archive-driven discourses.

Through its thematic issues, Archivo Papers examines how images shape and are shaped by memory, knowledge, and social narratives. The journal engages with topics such as photographic archives, collections, and the shifting material and immaterial dimensions of images, considering photography as both an object and a practice. It addresses issues of preservation, circulation, mediation, and the politics of visual memory while fostering interdisciplinary dialogue across photography, visual studies, art history, cultural and media studies, and other related fields.

Archivo Papers provides an international forum for critical inquiry into photography, lens-based media, and visual culture. The journal encourages diverse theoretical, historical, and practice-led approaches that investigate how images are created, circulated, and preserved, as well as their cultural and political implications. By embracing multiple perspectives and methodological approaches, Archivo Papers advances new ways of thinking about the politics, ethics, and aesthetics of the visual. It is committed to examining photography’s place within archival systems and broader cultural frameworks, fostering critical engagement with the visual in both historical and contemporary contexts.

The journal seeks to:

  • Explore archival perspectives in photography and visual culture, addressing questions of preservation, historiography, and artistic intervention.
  • Foster interdisciplinary dialogue by connecting voices from the humanities, social sciences, and the arts.
  • Promote critical reflections on photography’s role in shaping narratives, identities, and cultural memory.
  • Encourage experimental and creative methodologies, providing space for innovative research, artistic practices, and visual inquiries.
  • Expand discussions on the technical image, its materiality, and its evolving significance in contemporary visual culture.
