Abstract
In 2013, as part of a donation, the Abraham Moles library was incorporated into the BNU collections. With around 7,000 volumes, this collection reflects the diverse interests of a researcher trained in both the exact sciences and the human sciences. Its books, files, records and objects illustrate Moles’ intellectual and professional journey, from his early work as an engineer specialising in electroacoustics to his research in social psychology, and from his collaboration with the RTF Radio and Television Studies Centre to his work on the subject of kitsch. Its breadth also includes Moles’ areas of special expertise as a pioneer of the information and communication sciences in France, including computing and urban planning, posters and design, semiology and “futurism.” The topic to be pursued during the researcher’s stay must be directly related to the Abraham Moles collection at the National and University Library.

Thanks to the generosity of one of its patrons, the BNU is awarding a residency grant in 2026 for the pursuit of academic-level work involving the Abraham Moles collection.
In 2013, as part of a donation made by Elisabeth Rohmer-Moles, the Abraham Moles library was incorporated into the BNU collections. With around 7,000 volumes, this collection reflects the diverse interests of a researcher trained in both the exact sciences and the human sciences. Its books, files, records and objects illustrate Moles’ intellectual and professional journey, from his early work as an engineer specialising in electroacoustics to his research in social psychology, and from his collaboration with the RTF Radio and Television Studies Centre to his work on the subject of kitsch. Its breadth also includes Moles’ areas of special expertise as a pioneer of the information and communication sciences in France, including computing and urban planning, posters and design, semiology and “futurism.”
The topic to be pursued during the researcher’s stay must be directly related to the Abraham Moles collection at the National and University Library. It must involve the parts of the collection mentioned in the Calames catalogue (musicology, acoustics), or those related to psychology, a portion of sociology or the magnetic tape collection.
Financing arrangements and eligible expenses
The grant is in the amount of €10,000 (ten thousand euros) for candidates residing abroad or in France outside the Grand Est region. It is in the amount of €6,000 (six thousand euros) for candidates residing in the Grand Est region.
This amount constitutes an allowance intended to cover the researcher’s travel and residence costs, and is not intended as remuneration. There will be no employment contract.
Eligibility conditions
In order for his or her application to be eligible, the candidate must:
- Be a lecturer/university professor (enseignant-chercheur), research fellow/research director (chercheur), tenured research engineer, or postdoctoral researcher.
- Be available to come to BNU premises as often as the research topic requires.
There is no nationality requirement.
Application
Applications shall be submitted directly by email to aapchercheurs@BNU.fr.
The application file must be sent in the form of a single PDF, generated by word processing software, not scanned, and not protected.
This includes:
- A completed response template including administrative information and a presentation of the research topic proposed, specifying the objectives, the method, the various phases planned, the expected results, and the possible beneficial use thereof (4 pages maximum).
- A detailed curriculum vitae.
Selection criteria
Applications meeting the eligibility criteria will be forwarded to the BNU Scientific Board, which will organise the selection by evaluating the following criteria:
- The interest of the topic proposed for the promotion of the Abraham Moles collection;
- The candidate’s ability to carry out their research within the proposed timeframe in compliance with the academic requirements applicable in this field, and the alignment of their project with their personal background;
- The clarity and completeness of their application file;
- The potential for a beneficial use of the research results.
Provisional timetable
- Call opens: 1 June 2025

Call closes: 1 October 2025 midnight (Paris time).
- Results: last quarter of 2025 after approval by the institution’s governing bodies.
- Start of work, at the researcher’s discretion: six consecutive months during 2026.
