Linguistic anthropology originated via a focus on language use. Now language has two key features: It is only ever encountered in use, that is, processually. And it is forever the medium of its own explication, that is, it is reflexive. To grapple with language, one accordingly needs concepts that possess these features. As is well known, linguistic anthropology arrived at such concepts through its grounding in Peircean semiotics. Another basis for the sub-discipline’s concepts has been the Boasian comparativist tradition of language study. Continuing its exploration of the latter, this conference proposes a focus on the concept of calibration, first taken up by Benjamin Lee Whorf.

Dans le cadre du séminaire annuel Jeu(x) de langage du Lacito, pour terminer l'année 2024-2025, nous tenons cette journée d'étude internationale.

Cette journée d’étude internationale portera sur le rapport entre les concepts émergeant du terrain ethnographique et ceux produits dans le champ disciplinaire des sciences sociales du langage. En particulier seront abordées les manières dont l’anthropologie linguistique s’est saisie de la notion d’« étalonnage » (calibration). Emprunté au domaine de la métrologie, ce terme est employé de manière métaphorique, pour évoquer à la fois la comparaison entre langues et la relation entre ce que Goffman appelle le “monde dont on parle” et le “monde dans lequel on parle” (1987: 157; voir également Whorf 1956; Silverstein 1993, 2021). Les exposés exploreront les usages de ce terme dans l'anthropologie linguistique en relation avec deux thématiques : l’(in)commensurabilité des mondes socioculturels (Kockelman 2016, 2024 ; voir Povinelli 2001 ; Holbraad 2012) ; et la notion d’échelle (Carr et Lempert 2016 ; Gal & Irvine 2019 : esp. 217-249 ; Lempert 2024). Les jugements d’(in)commensurabilité dépendent d’actes antérieurs d’étalonnage. Il en va de même pour la mobilisation d’échelles et leur « circulation ». Portant sur des ethnographies du langage, et des analyses critiques et réflexives de celles-ci, les présentations exploreront comment la notion d’étalonnage pourrait ouvrir de nouvelles pistes d’étude dans les sciences sociales du langage.
