Cette journée d’étude propose de réfléchir aux effets intimes de l’expérience éducative de dignitaires exilés à La Réunion à l’orée du XX^e siècle. Lieu d’expérimentation de la réclusion, leur exil se caractérise comme un temps de publicisation de la parole avec l’édition de mémoires, d’articles de presse. Il s’agit de voir comment ces univers carcéraux, en recrudescence durant la période coloniale, contribuent à modeler les corps et les âmes des détenus. Centré sur les écrits des dignitaires exilés, cette journée d’études cherche à sonder les changements intimes que ces nouveaux savoirs scolaires opèrent en termes de sociabilité, de relation à soi et aux autres, dans un contexte de résistance à l’occupation française.

This workshop explores the intimate effects of the educational experience of dignitaries exiled to Reunion Island at the dawn of the 20th century.  Experimenting seclusion, their exile was also a time of publicizing their words, with the publication of memoirs and press articles. The aim is to see how these prison worlds, which were on the increase during the colonial period, helped shape the bodies and souls of the inmates. Focusing on the writings of exiled dignitaries, this workshop seeks to probe the intimate changes that these new scholastic knowledges operate in terms of sociability, relationship to self and others, in a context of resistance to French occupation.
