Argument

The confrontation between literature and philosophy is part of a long tradition. Plato already spoke of the “ancient dispute between philosophy and poetic creation” (Republic). Questioning the relationship that contemporary literature maintains with philosophy prompts us to reflect on the treatment given by writers increasingly to themes directly related to philosophy, and on the orientation of philosophers…

Writers increasingly address themes directly related to philosophy, and philosophers are increasingly oriented toward literature, which they consider the principal means of representing the world. As a result, literature and philosophy maintain a relationship that is both complex and dynamic. Distinguished by their methods, literature and philosophy each presume, in their own way, choices of reflection that fundamentally oppose them. Both means (modes) of reflection and expression work toward human understanding, the enrichment of knowledge, and ethics.
