Abstract

Ten years after the death of the writer Pia Pera (1956–2016), the aim of this full-day workshop is to explore her entire body of work in depth for the first time. Adopting a multidisciplinary approach, we aim to restore the diversity of her writing and highlight its place in the Italian literary landscape. Her work anticipated issues that we consider essential today, and she was a complex, protean and unique figure.

Argument

Goffredo Fofi described Pia Pera as a «strange character in our literature» in a long review of L'Arcipelago di Longo Maï (Baldini & Castoldi, 2000) (Lo Straniero, n.13-14, 2001). This «strangeness» undoubtedly stems from a diverse literary career spanning non-fiction, translation and fiction since the turn of the 21st century. This has resulted in a writing style that lies somewhere between narrative, investigation and autobiography before evolving into a style in which the garden becomes both the subject and a mirror of the world.

A Slavic scholar and specialist in Russian history, Pia Pera translated more than twenty works from Russian and English and edited several critical editions. She has also written a novel and a collection of short stories and has been an active journalist, collaborating with various newspapers and magazines since the 1980s. From 2000 onwards, Pia Pera began experimenting with hybrid forms of writing that combined narration, critical reflection, and introspection. This could be described as autofiction or «ecobiography» (Jean-Philippe Pierron, Je est un nous, Actes Sud, 2021), in which the experience of the natural world serves as a vehicle for ethical and existential contemplation.

Beyond the diversity of themes addressed, Pia Pera's writing is distinguished by constant formal rigour and coherent motifs: giving voice to marginalised groups through rewriting myth (Diario di Lo, 1995) and recording the testimonies of the Longo Maï agricultural community (2000); the desire to challenge perspectives and stereotypes, particularly in stories written in the nineties, through bold explorations of sexuality, but also subsequently, in the reversal of perspectives between human and more-than-human; paying attention to land and nature in articles and reports from the 1990s onwards, which she then elaborated on in her writings on gardens; questioning the relationship between humans, plants and animals; and exploring the theme of care, transforming her literary universe into a space of attention to living things and resistance to loss.

Proposals should focus on one of the following themes: 

  • the role of the body, sexuality and female representation in short stories;
  • rewriting the myth: Diario di Lo;
  • Pia Pera as a translator;
  • journalism and literary criticism: articles and reports, and writing critical reviews for newspapers and magazines.
  • the role of history in Pera's education and writing, focusing on the Old Believers and Russian history.
  • the Role of Spirituality (Eastern and Western Religions) in Pia Pera's Work
  • eco-critical approaches
  • ‘Orti di pace’: teaching and learning through gardening.
  • setting Pia Pera's literary work to music and voice, including the theatrical adaptation of The Secret Garden, her work with Lorenza Zambon, and writing lyrics for Gianna Nannini's album Pia. Come la canto io;
  • translations of Pera's works and their reception abroad.

Submission guidelines

Proposals must be written in one of the three languages of this study day: French, English or Italian. They should be between 1000 and 3000 characters in length and accompanied by a bio-bibliographical presentation. Please send them by email to elisa.veronesi@univ-cotedazur.fr,

The scientific committee will respond by April 30 at the latest. 

The proceedings will be published.
