Abstract

After examining our “fast life” and the rampant consumerism of our capitalist society, we would like to return to the subject of nature and its culture. What defines nature? Is it solely a resource to be consumed?

Argument

We are currently experiencing the consequences of choices made by companies and decision-makers in the past: microplastics are now a permanent feature of our tap water, pesticides and cadmium are still found in our organic produce, and PFAS are everywhere. However much we create our own household products, compost our leftovers, grow vegetable gardens on our balconies, or make tinctorial dyes from weeds, our primary resources are indefinitely polluted. Where does that leave nature? And what are we to do now ?

Although raw material prices are rising and natural resources are being depleted, we can still buy more and more low-end goods at unbeatable prices with increasingly shorter delivery times! How can this gap be explained? Large multinational companies such as Ikea buy carbon credits by planting trees in countries that have never asked for them, while destroying entire ecosystems on the other side of the world. Greenwashing is everywhere, and actions and commitments have become mere spectacles! How can we continue to consume without looking around us? How did we get to the point where our ideas are so disconnected from our actions?
