Abstract

Following the colloquium held in Rennes, France, on October 9 and 10, to celebrate the magazine's fifteenth anniversary and as we approach the end of the first quarter of the 21st century, we would like to explore how contemporary Latin American imaginaries (primarily through literary and artistic production) contextualize not only belonging to specific territories but also the place these territories occupy in an increasingly globalized cultural universe.

Argument

Following the colloquium held in Rennes, France, on October 9 and 10, to celebrate the magazine's fifteenth anniversary and as we approach the end of the first quarter of the 21st century, we would like to explore how contemporary Latin American imaginaries (primarily through literary and artistic production) contextualize not only belonging to specific territories but also the place these territories occupy in an increasingly globalized cultural universe. Undoubtedly, Latin America holds a specific and essential space in this cultural globalization (one might consider telenovelas, or major literary fairs, such as Guadalajara, a showcase for numerous publishers and authors, even those outside the Spanish-speaking world). The rise of digital literature, as well as online platforms, has offered better dissemination of this type of cultural production and has also allowed for increased visibility of works that fell outside the established canon or came from other groups, although a rise in the commercialization of these symbolic goods has also been observed.

This creative process must also be understood as a site of various cultural intersections, since Latin America is trading influences with other areas (Anglo-Saxon, Asian, European). Therefore, is it still relevant to speak of a distinctly Latin American literature (or one specific to a territory of the subcontinent, be it Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, among others), of a film production specific to a precise geographical area, or, in the context of globalized cultural industries, should this criterion be considered no longer relevant?

To answer these questions, we would like to focus on the following three themes:

  • What are the possible intertextualities for literature and the arts in Latin America in the 21st century? Are there recurring references or “hypotexts”? If pop culture has been omnipresent since the end of the last century, what do these references tell us? What links do they have with the cultural industries? Where does Latin America stand on this multicultural chessboard?
  • What are the specificities of the market for cultural goods in Latin America? What role do public authorities play, primarily in the financing, dissemination, and popularization of literature and art? What imaginaries might arise from this state presence? What mediations are in place to allow access to an audience often distanced from this type of expression? How can these policies be situated on a global scale?
  • From a more theoretical perspective, is it still relevant to speak of transculturation (Rama, 1982) or hybridization (Canclini, 1992) to describe influences from another cultural sphere? If these concepts are still useful for analyzing 20th-century literature, would it be interesting to adapt or revisit them to reflect on new forms of writing in the 21st century, including digital literature? It is also worth asking whether these concepts need to be adapted to increasingly globalized references.
