Né le 28 mars 1949, à Allada en République du Bénin, Monsieur Codjovi Étienne Joseph Adande, a fait sa carrière d’enseignant-chercheur à l’université d’Abomey Calavi. À l’occasion de son départ à la retraite, ses collègues et anciens étudiants ont décidé de rendre hommage à son travail et à sa carrière, en lui offrant un ouvrage mélanges dont la parution est prévue pour décembre 2026.

Festschrift in honour of Mr Codjovi Étienne Joseph ADANDE, Senior Lecturer in Art History at the University of Abomey-Calavi, Benin

Argument

Born on 28 March 1949, in Allada in the Republic of Benin, Mr Codjovi Étienne Joseph ADANDE pursued his career as a lecturer-researcher at the University of Abomey Calavi until retirement. On the occasion of his retirement, his colleagues and former students, in collaboration with the Centre for Linguistic and Historical Studies by Oral Tradition (CELHTO), a specialized office of the African Union Commission based in Niamey, Niger, the African Heritage School (EPA), a university-level institution with a regional and international vocation, specialised in the conservation and mediation of tangible and intangible cultural heritage, headquartered in Porto-Novo, Benin, and the Department of History and Archaeology of the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences (FLASH) of the University of Abomey-Calavi, Benin, have decided to pay tribute to his work and career by offering him a Festschrift, scheduled for publication in December 2026.

Holder of a third-cycle doctorate obtained at Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University in 1984, Mr Codjovi Étienne Joseph ADANDE became, after his recruitment as a lecturer researcher, Lecturer (CAMES) in 2003. In 2012, he defended his Higher Doctorate at the University of Lomé on the theme: “Humour in traditional and contemporary African arts”. This latter defence enabled him to attain the rank of Senior Lecturer of CAMES in 2012, before he was admitted to claim his right to retirement in 2014.

From a scientific standpoint, the individual has published around forty articles and books and has taken part in around fifteen scientific events in Africa, Europe and North America. He has been the recipient of various grants and programmes that enabled him to strengthen his training: AUF mobility grant (2007), Metropolitain Museum Of Arts scholarship, New York (2007), Visiting Lecturer at the University of Bayreuth (2006), Visiting Researcher at the University of Turin in Italy (2001, then 2003), DAAD partnership grant at the University of Trier in Germany (2000), Visiting Senior Lecturer at the French National Museum of Natural History, Paris (2000), Visiting Fellow at the University of Iowa in the USA (1989), etc. He also supervised several dissertations and single-doctorate PhD theses.

From an administrative standpoint, he served as Head of the Department of History/Archaeology of the Faculty of Letters, Arts and Human Sciences (FLASH) of the University of Benin, from 2000 to 2003. Before that, he was a member of the Board of Directors of the West African Museums Program (WAMP), from 1993 to 2000. He also became involved in associative life by founding the International Association of Art Critics in Benin in 1997.

It is therefore, in view of his commitment in the service of science and training, notably in the cultural field, that this Festschrift is being organised to pay tribute to the work he has accomplished.

The volume will comprise three parts. The first will focus on testimonies and the work of the individual concerned. The second will cover articles addressing the honouree’s preferred themes. The third and final part will be devoted to varia dealing with all subjects relating to African history and cultures.

Submission guidelines

Abstracts of articles of a maximum of 300 words must be sent to the organising committee, according to the timetable below:

Timetable

• 28 February 2026: receipt of article abstracts;
• 20 March 2026: acceptance notification to authors whose abstracts are 
  selected;
• 30 May 2026: submission of full articles by authors whose abstract has been 
  accepted;
• 30 July 2026: return of peer-reviewed texts to authors;
• 30 August 2026: return of corrected articles after review to the organising 
  committee;
• September–October 2026: editing work;
• December 2026: publication of the Festschrift volume.

Publication fees

At the end of the selection process, authors whose articles are selected for publication 
will be invited to pay the publication fee, which amounts to 40,000 FCFA, i.e. 60 Euros.

Tribute ceremony

A ceremony will be organised around the publication of the volume by CELHTO, EPA 
and the University of Abomey-Calavi. The venue and participation conditions will be defined later.

Né le 28 mars 1949, à Allada en République du Bénin, Monsieur Codjovi Étienne Joseph ADANDE, a fait sa carrière d’enseignant-chercheur à l’Université d’Abomey Calavi jusqu’à la retraite. À l’occasion de son départ à la retraite, ses collègues et anciens étudiants, en collaboration avec le Centre d’études linguistiques et historiques par tradition orale (CELHTO), bureau spécialisé de la Commission de l’Union Africaine basé à Niamey au Niger, l’École du patrimoine africain (EPA), un établissement universitaire à vocation régionale et internationale, spécialisé dans la conservation et la médiation du patrimoine culturel matériel et immatériel dont le siège est à Porto Novo au Bénin et le Département d'Histoire et d'Archéologie de la Faculté des Sciences Humaines et Sociales (FLASH) de l'Université d'Abomey- Calavi du Bénin ont décidé de rendre hommage à son travail et à sa carrière, en lui offrant un ouvrage mélanges dont la parution est prévue pour décembre 2026. 

Nanti d’un doctorat de troisième cycle obtenu à l’Université Paris I, Panthéon Sorbonne en 1984, Monsieur Codjovi Étienne Joseph ADANDE, est passé, après son recrutement comme enseignant-chercheur, Maître-assistant (CAMES) en 2003. En 2012, il a soutenu son doctorat d’Etat à l’Université de Lomé sur le thème : « L’humour dans les arts africains traditionnels et contemporains ». Cette dernière soutenance a permis à l’homme de passer, le grade de Maître de Conférences du CAMES en 2012, avant qu’il ne soit admis à faire valoir son droit à la retraite en 2014.

Sur le plan scientifique, l’intéressé a publié une quarantaine d’articles et d’ouvrages et a participé à une quinzaine de manifestations scientifiques en Afrique, en Europe et en Amérique du Nord. Il a été lauréat de diverses bourses et programmes lui ayant permis de renforcer sa formation : Bourse de mobilité AUF (2007), Bourse du Métropolitain Museum Of Arts, New York (2007), enseignant Invité à l’Université de Bayreuth (2006), Chercheur Invité à l’Université de Turin en Italie (2001, puis 2003), Bourse de partenariat du DAAD à l’Université de Trier en Allemagne (2000), Maître de Conférences Invité au Museum National d’Histoire Naturelle, Paris (2000), Visiting Fellow à l’Université d’Iowa aux USA (1989), etc. Aussi, il a encadré plusieurs mémoires et thèses de doctorat unique.

Sur le plan administratif, il a assuré les fonctions de chef du Département d’Histoire/Archéologie de la Faculté des Lettres, Arts et Sciences Humaines (FLASH) de l’Université du Bénin, de 2000 à 2003. Mais avant, il a été membre du Conseil 2d’Administration de West African Museums Program (WAMP), de 1993 à 2000. Aussi, il s’est engagé dans la vie associative en fondant l’Association Internationale des Critiques d’Art au Bénin en 1997. C’est donc eu égard à son engagement au service de la science, de la formation, notamment dans le domaine culturel, que les présents mélanges sont organisés pour rendre hommage au travail qu’il a accompli. L’ouvrage comportera trois parties. La première s’intéressera aux témoignages et à l’œuvre de l’intéressé. La deuxième portera sur les articles s’intéressant aux thématiques de prédilection du dédicataire. La troisième et dernière partie sera consacrée aux varias traitant de tous les sujets portant sur l’histoire et les cultures africaines.

Les résumés d’articles de 300 mots maximum doivent être envoyés au comité d’organisation, suivant le calendrier ci-après

• 28 février 2026 : réception des résumés d’articles ;
• 20 mars 2026 : notification d’acceptation aux auteurs dont les résumés sont retenus ;
• 30 mai 2026 : soumission des articles complets des auteurs dont le résumé a été accepté ;
• 30 juillet 2026 : retour des textes évalués par les pairs aux auteurs ;
• 30 août 2026 : retour des articles corrigés après évaluation au comité d’organisation ;
• Septembre-Octobre 2026 : travail d’édition ;
• Décembre 2026 : parution de l’ouvrage-mélanges.

De la cérémonie d’hommage Une cérémonie sera organisée autour de la parution de l’ouvrage par le CELHTO, l’EPA et l'Université d'Abomey- Calavi.
