Argument

A trilingual journal (English, French and Spanish) issued twice a year, passés futurs publishes original articles exploring the social and memorial uses of the past in contemporary contexts, along with political, national or religious issues from previous centuries. The journal welcomes submissions adopting comparative, international and interdisciplinary perspective, drawing on history, anthropology, sociology, political science, and studies in literature, cinema, theatre, music and artistic creation.

passés futurs publishes work examining how specific events from the past are transformed into often controversial issues in the making of collective and individual identities. A central concern of the journal is the study of these uses of the past in contexts marked by both the geography of public controversies and conflicts of memory. Such issues may be explored at local, regional, national and global levels through actions and narratives that often intersect with academic research. The journal also welcomes contributions that question the relevance of longstanding divisions: between the public, private and community spheres; between the scholarly and the popular; between investigations conducted by ‘professionals’ and by ‘amateurs,’ activists, associations or social movements. We also accept contributions that analyze how the past becomes the subject of inquiry for many novelists, filmmakers and artists. At a time when the social sciences face growing demands for justice and reparation, the journal is interested in how collectives and individuals construct their own accounts of the past. We therefore seek to understand the motivations, circulation and reception of these reinterpretations of the past in the making.

Thematic dossiers are proposed by one or more coordinators. They consist of a minimum of four and a maximum of eight articles that have passed the evaluation stage. Dossier proposals are submitted to the editorial board, which decides on their acceptance. A dossier must not exceed 500,000 characters (including spaces, notes, bibliography and abstract).

To propose a dossier to the journal, please submit a statement of intent presenting the theme of the dossier, together with a detailed outline containing the titles, authors, and abstracts of each article. If the dossier is accepted, the articles must be submitted to the journal for evaluation. The editorial board reserves the right to decide whether or not to publish each article (see ‘Recommendations for authors’).

Articles submitted to thematic dossiers or to the ‘Varia’ section must be between 40,000 and 50,000 characters (including spaces, notes, bibliography, and abstract). The maximum length should be strictly respected.
