Abstract

The congress invites scholars to reflect on the representation of death in art, literature, and history from the Middle Ages to the present day. Taking the iconic theme of the Dance of Death as its starting point, contributions may explore both the iconographic and literary traditions associated with it, including the Encounter of the Three Living and the Three Dead, the Triumph of Death, the Ars moriendi, the Memento mori, the Vanitas, and eschatological themes connected with the Last Judgement. Papers may also address funerary monuments and monumental sepulchral art, including gisants, tombs, and cemeteries, as well as the social practices surrounding death, such as funeral rites, the commemoration of the dead, and obituary traditions.

Presentation

The 22nd International Congress of the Danses macabres d’Europe (DME) will take place in Turin, at the Castello del Valentino from 13 to 16 October 2027. Organised by the Department of Humanities (StudiUm) of the University of Turin, the congress forms part of the inter-university study days Virality and Death: Challenges and New Research Perspectives across the Humanities, Science and Technology.

Particular attention will be devoted to the documentation, analysis, and comparative study of recurring macabre motifs across the centuries in monumental art (murals, sculpture, and stained glass), manuscript illumination, printmaking, literature, music, and the performing arts.

The programme will also include public events and visits to selected cultural and heritage sites in Piedmont, a region distinguished by its rich artistic heritage connected with the macabre.

In keeping with previous editions, the congress will be organised in partnership with cultural institutions based in the local area. The most recent edition, held in Paris in 2025, involved collaboration with the Musée Carnavalet-Histoire of Paris, the École du Louvre, the École Pratique des Hautes Études, and the Centre Jean-Mabillon, and commemorated the 600th anniversary of the frescoes of the first Danse Macabre, painted in the Cemetery of the Saints-Innocents in Paris between 1424 and 1425.

Topics

Within the broad thematic framework, the following areas are of particular interest:

Danse Macabre and iconographies of death between the Middle Ages and the early modern period

Studies devoted to the Danse Macabre and the principal related iconographic cycles, including the Encounter of the Three Living and the Three Dead, the Triumph of Death, the Ars moriendi, the Vanitas, and the Last Judgement, with particular attention to the contexts of production, circulation, and reception of images across different European regions.

Death, memory, and ritual: texts, practices, and cultural traditions

Analyses of literary, textual, and musical sources, as well as ritual practices and popular and religious traditions connected with the representation and management of death, memory, and the afterlife, approached from historical and comparative perspectives.

The macabre in the visual, performative, and sonic arts

Contributions addressing the role of the macabre in the visual and monumental arts, as well as in music, theatre, dance, cinema, and performance, with particular attention to the interplay of image, body, sound, and space.

Circulation of models and intercultural dialogues

Research on the transmission, adaptation, and transformation of macabre motifs across geographical areas, media, and historical periods, with particular emphasis on cultural networks, hybridisations, and processes of local and transnational reinterpretation.

Methodologies and digital technologies

Research and methodological reflections integrating digital media and technologies, including digital humanities, artificial intelligence, 3D modelling, and tools for digital visualisation and cataloguing, in order to foster a contemporary reappraisal of the macabre and to illuminate present-day challenges in light of its historical legacy.

Paper proposals

Any participant, whether or not a member of the DME Association, may submit a proposal within the thematic areas listed above. Contributions may address any historical period. Particularly welcome are previously unpublished research, recent discoveries, thematic studies, and reflections engaging with digital media and technologies, including AI, 3D modelling, and advanced software.

Paper proposals may be submitted from 10 March to 10 September 2026. To submit a proposal, each participant must complete the online form and provide an abstract not exceeding 1,000 characters, including spaces.

The same form should also be used by those wishing to register as attendees or accompanying persons.

The Scientific Committee will evaluate the proposal and will notify applicants of the outcome by email between 30 September and 10 October 2026. By 1 November 2026, participants must confirm their attendance in accordance with the procedures specified in the letter of acceptance and in a subsequent circular.

Papers

Oral presentations must not exceed twenty minutes. Papers may be presented in any Romance language, as well as in English or German.

Publication of the proceedings

The papers, which may include images and photos, will be published in the proceedings volume, which is scheduled to appear in time for the congress. Speakers therefore undertake to submit their final texts by the established deadline; otherwise, their contribution cannot be included in the volume.

All submissions received for publication will be subject to peer review. Detailed guidelines for the preparation and submission of final manuscripts will be subsequently provided. Manuscripts must not exceed 35,000 characters, including spaces.
