The AHRB-funded project 'Sparta in Comparative Perspective', directed by Professor Stephen Hodkinson, is offering two funded PhD studentships (starting September/October 2005).

One studentship is offered for research on an aspect of Spartan civic religious practice viewed in comparative perspective.

The other studentship is offered for research on an aspect of relations between Spartans and outsiders viewed in comparative perspective.

The studentships are open to United Kingdom (UK) and European Union (EU) applicants, in accordance with the normal terms of AHRB doctoral awards. Applicants should have obtained, or have completed study for, a UK Masters degree or equivalent European qualification (e.g. Maitrise) by 1st October 2005.

The awards will be for a period of three years, subject to satisfactory progress. For UK award-holders, the studentships will pay both tuition fees and a normal AHRB maintenance grant.

For European Union award-holders, AHRB studentships cover tuition fees only. However, the School of Humanities at Nottingham will pay one EU award-holder a maintenance grant equivalent to an AHRB grant, as a supplement to the AHRB tuition-fees award.
