This workshop explores the power of the imagination in the fashioning, consumption, and dialogue surrounding the global heritage industry. It asks: How does the heritage industry seize the collective imagination to fashion tourism products ? What sort of interpretations and imagined geographies, both cultural and ethnographic, are created through the development of new tourism destinations? Under whose authority are tourism sites produced and interpreted within a larger discourse of self determination? How do local groups position themselves in relation to the tourism site in terms of their work places, everyday lives, sacred spaces, traditions, arts, etc ? In what ways is the tourism imagination produced within these places? And what role do tourists themselves play in the co production of the tourism site as a space that is both imaginary and real?
