Call for papers (English/French) for a special issue of Revue Etudes Canadiennes/ Canadian Studies (n°75) dedicated to Canada and the Commonwealth.

Argument
Papers could explore Canada’s political contribution to the founding of the Commonwealth in 1931 and the successive reinterpretations of its missions in the 20th century, particularly in the 1960s and 1970s. Was the Commonwealth organization, a typical British, imperial forum or to the contrary was Canada active in positioning it as an international lobby (political, commercial, cultural lobby) ? How has/does this forum feature(d) in Canada’s foreign affairs policy in recent periods ?
Following this geopolitical perspective, it might be interesting to revisit Canada’s investment or lack of it, in the 20th and 21st centuries, taking into account specific periods like the Second World War, British decolonization, the Cold War, Britain’s entry in the EU or more recent political decisions to rekindle Canada’s royal connections ….
Economically speaking, we could look at the Commonwealth of nations with its network of emerging countries. How has it been taken into consideration by Canadian governments over the past 50 to 60 years. Did Canada benefit from any leadership in this economic network? Did/does Canada contribute to any economic aid plans within the Commonwealth?
From a more cultural or artistic perspectives, did/does the Commonwealth create any network of artists or university forums? Did/does it bring together communities defending shared cultural values or post-colonial experiences?
Canadian Studies / Etudes Canadiennes is a peer-reviewed journal publishing papers written by European and North American scholars in both English or French. We welcome contributions from the large spectrum of the social sciences, the humanities, the arts and political sciences.
Submission guidelines
Submit a short presentation of your proposal along with a short bio
before Septembre 1, 2013.
If your proposal is selected by the Review’s scientific committee, we expect a full paper before Novembre 25, 2013 (about 35,000 characters, footnotes included.)
