Abstract

Portuguese singularity presents today new communication bridges in comparison to other territorial realities, offering itself as a rare laboratory of sociological analysis. Regression phenomenon’s (both structural and dispositional) of articulation of social change’s asynchronous rhythms, of risk proliferation and uncertainty, conflictive conciliation of multiple modernities, within an unfinished one, challenge us to look sociologically at these last 40 years and also to think prospectively on tendencies and future challenges.

Announcement

In 25 of April of 1974, Portugal began, with a delay of several decades, a transition to democracy that speeded, in a singular way, vast processes of social change. Social scientists, from different national origins, have been deepening connections between the Portuguese revolution and previous and also ulterior social movements within the European and even global context.

Furthermore, Portuguese singularity has other outlines: since then until now, Portugal intensified in an unheard way modifications within its social structures: completed a demographic transition (being today a highly aged country, with very low fertility and marriage rates); went from a rural country to a services society; increased the educational levels and urbanized itself but with very diffused and in situ urbanization traits; gave to women new roles and new leading positions; assumed itself an European nation with post-colonial contours (in the same territory, different ethnic and cultural identities coexist); internationalized references and institutional practices, namely regarding the structure of a universally covered welfare state; deeply modified cultural practices and lifestyles.

However it all was done with contradictions, asymmetries and inequalities. If the poverty’s intensity has decreased, the same can´t be said about inequalities that remain high. It has politically democratized but the public sphere and social movements still present fragile configurations, expressed by an increased distance from power, in terms of citizenship. Received several contingents of immigrants but is now at crisis, in a precarious process and with high unemployment rates, reactivating emigration, but this time with an increasing heterogeneity since it is exporting its “brains”.

Approaches the European average regarding scholar performances but the structure of the active population is still archaic. The welfare state directly transmutes to social-state and threatens to become a minimal state, in a moment that better public services and public services coverage rates were yet to be reached.

Calling out to the participation of foreign and domestic specialists, the VIII Congress, following previous editions, intends to continue to deepen Portuguese sociological exchange beyond boarders, searching for continuities in accumulated knowledge, but also creating opportunities to the expression and confrontation of new approaches.

Similar to previous editions of the Portuguese Sociological Congress, proposals for communication/posters will be accepted for sessions dedicated to each thematic session [TS] or thematic area [TA] (in the case of the domains where there still aren´t thematic sessions already created by the APS). In the table below you will find the sections and thematic areas where you can register your proposal in, as well as the call for proposals presentation.
