Panel "Party systems in post-revolutionary States"
Year 2014 will mark the third anniversary of the ‘Arab spring’ with a very significant change for the following countries: Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and Yemen. Since 2011, the opening of the political life together with the return of political opponents from exile allowed a much wider supply-side expression. From an authoritarian party system with the hegemony of one party, Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and Yemen are now experiencing a more plural supply-side configuration that brings them to face challenges in the governance-building process on the one hand and allows us to consider the party system through a new perspective on the other hand. According to Lipset and Rokkan, political parties are meant to express a situation of conflict over one or several cleavages, thus making the democratic nature of the system. How are these countries doing regarding this matter?
Focus on a stand-alone national party system as well as cross-national analyses are at the core of this panel. Papers based on field work and empirical evidence will be highly privileged but will not constitute the exclusive body of the panel contributions. The objective of this panel is to identify the on-going tendencies and evolutions of party systems inside post-revolutionary countries with the underlying question on their ability to build a democratic system.
Main Themes
The following aspects will be considered but do not stand as exclusive points to address:
- Electoral type of regime and current typology of the party system
- Formation of political parties (mass party, elite or cadre party, catch-all party) and the role of elites/grassroots in this process
- Ability of the supply-side part (political parties) to structure and mobilise the demand-side counter-part (electorate): ideology, polarisation and public-opinion shaping.
- Role of pre-revolutionary context in the determination of the current party system
