Resulting from a series of developed works in the last decade within the framework of social sciences (namely Sociology of Culture, Sociology of Arts, Sociology of Youth, Urban Sociology and Sociology of Music), in this advanced seminar we will have the opportunity of deepening the understanding around the importance, functioning, process, the agents, characteristics, genres and subgenres of the current urban music scenes. The ANOTHER MUSIC IN A DIFFERENT ROOM will be a fruitful space for ideas, discussions and, therefore, for a great developments on scientific knowledge. So, it’s our intention to share all this scientific dynamic with the world in order to contribute to a larger debate on music, youth, lifestyles, culture, cultural scenes, music scenes. In this context, the ideas and discussions held in the Advanced Seminar, both by lecturers and participants, will be published in a Collaborative e-book.

 

Presentation

It’ s with a great pleasure, the Coordination of KISMIF International Conference announces the Advanced Seminar ANOTHER MUSIC IN A DIFFERENT ROOM to be held in Porto, between July 14th and July 16th, 2014. The organisation of this Advanced Seminar will be undertaken by the Research Project Keep It Simple, Make It Fast! (PTDC/CS-SOC/118830/2010). The opportunity to initiate the Advanced Seminar is related to the realization of KISMIF International Conference, and the possibility of deepening both theoretical and methodological questions in both proximity and dialogue with some of the main world references of the urban musical scenes.

Object

This advanced seminar is the result of a series of developed works in the last decade within the framework of social sciences, namely Sociology of Culture, Sociology of Arts, Sociology of Youth, Urban Sociology and Sociology of Music. Hence, it is important to understand the importance, functioning, process, the agents, characteristics, genres and subgenres of the current urban mu-sic scenes.  This will lead to a insightful debate about its mains aspects and structuring guidelines.

Since the publication of the of the emblematic book Music Scenes: Local, Translocal, and Virtual by  Andy Bennett and Richard  A. Peterson in the last decade, this will be the first decisive moment of systematization of the transformations of music scenes from the presentation of this work until now .  The music scenes invite us to map the territory of the city in new ways while, at the same time, defining types of activity whose relationship with the territory is not easily expressed. There exists a contradiction between the growing visibility of the urban music scenes and its persistent illegitimacy as a sociological object of investigation. Such a contradiction is a research challenge to pursuit.

Objectives

• Explore the concept of the contemporary music scene, understand its dynamics and the challenges of the transformations of different social, historical and geographical contexts.
• Apply techniques and methodologies of analysis and research of urban music scenes.
• Identify and approach the axis of analysis in the configuration of the urban music scene: aging, gender, social integration, careers, professionalization, amateur activities, risks and DIY cultures.
• Analyse and systematize emblematic cases of local, trans-local and virtual scenes.
• Discover the newest developments in cultural policies concerning urban music scenes, namely
• a paradigm regarding constant musical dematerialization. 

Questions we address 

• What is the relevance of the musical scenes in the structuring of the urban world and the cities?
• How can we qualify the investigation for an adequate analysis of the current urban music scenes?
• What theoretical paradigms can we trigger in the study of the urban music scenes?
• What are the central questions that dominate the current music scenes?
• How to analyse the changes in the musical production and consumption in the definition of music scenes?
• What are the artistic and creative intersections of the most important current music scenes?
• What is the future of the urban music scenes in times of change?
• How to formulate strategies and instruments of directed politics for the intervention of contemporary music scene? 

With whom and where? 

• The seminar shall be oriented by pioneers and renowned world specialists in the study of musical scenes.
• The seminar is developed in the wake of a pioneer International Congress that congregates, for the first time, specialists from all over the world to debate musical scenes.
• The seminar is part of an investigation project about music scenes, namely punk, and assumes philosophy and the science of KISMIF itself.
• The seminar will be a restricted to a circle of discussion and issues in an atmosphere of close-ness and methodological experimentation.
• And all that in the city of Porto, one of the cities considered most beautiful of the world!

• For researchers to develop their work around urban music scenes. 

Methodology

The didactic approach will be done through seminars structures around the presentation of a theme, followed by a debate. The grounding is realized by way of the own case that every participant brings in, through a discussion of other cases, and a concrete assignment. Each seminar will be accompanied by a synthesis of the contents and of the questions raised. The didactic approach is directed at gaining awareness—of one’s own vision, of one’s values, of one’s need to know exploration—of new or different domains of knowledge grounding —crucial is the connection with one’s own practices, as professional, as policy maker, as student. The seminars will be accompanied by experimentation, that is, periods of documentary screening, visits to art galleries, bars, DJ sets or plural spaces of the urban musical scene. These moments, will be promoted by musicians, filmmakers, designers and illustrates that will talk about their first-hand experiences, demonstrating processes and exemplifying practices. At the end, each participant will be challenged to a storytelling of their own research, discussing and integrating the content of the seminars offered along this Advanced Seminar.

• The tuition fee is:
  • €280 per person, until June 1st, 2014.
  • €300 per person, until June 20th, 2014.
• The fee includes refreshments, materials, field trips, lunches and excludes accommodation and dinners.
