Vulnérabilité des littoraux méditerranéens face aux changements environnementaux contemporains
Vulnerability of Mediterranean coastal area to actual environmental changes
Published on Monday, April 27, 2015
Abstract

Argument
The Mediterranean area undergoes different climatic influences and is known to be a climatic change hotspot by the IPCC. Indeed, the climate change and sea level evolution are important there. It is also an ancient anthropized area where the current population growth on its coasts is important. High human densities imply high issues: touristic, economic, heritage-related, natural etc. Natural – directly or indirectly anthropogenic – consequences on that area raise new questions. This conference offers to focus on three of them:
Observed climatic evolution and simulation of future climate:
The Mediterranean basin is a meeting area for different air masses. It implies particular climatic conditions with extreme damages (heat waves, violent precipitations, long dry periods etc.) and detrimental environmental consequences (flood, landslide, wildfire etc.). Simulation of future climatic conditions helps to understand how those extremes might evolve (frequency and intensity) and also to prevent future risks.
Environmental changes in the Mediterranean: consequences, adaptation and vulnerability:
Added to the consequences of climate evolution, the physical vulnerability of coastal and urban areas of the Mediterranean is exacerbated by humans and their activities. Adaptation processes to environmental evolutions are very important but are not always easy to enforce.
The “natural” risks and the resilience of Mediterranean’s urbanized coastal areas:
The consequences of rising temperatures in cities may be exacerbated by urban morphology, high population densities etc. Understanding the resilience of these spaces, in the context of rising temperatures and urbanization, is a very important question.
The first goal of the conference (and of the articles for the special issue of the “Méditerranée” journal) is to present some examples of the observed environmental changes with different approaches as well as other analyses that include simulation of future climate change.
The second goal is to make an assessment, undoubtedly temporary, of the potential impacts of these changes on the vulnerability of Mediterranean coastal regions.
