Published on Monday, June 01, 2015

Abstract

Argument

I have attempted to set up a solid ground to the idea of„ Being Good“. I have embodied it within the Concept of Reverence for Live. My aim is to make people think about life and our relationship with every living being around us“ (Dr. Albert Schweitzer, 1958).

We are delighted to invite you to join us at the French Institute of Libreville in Gabon –the well-named city of freedom and of unending beaches with Coco trees, and white Sand – for a two-day symposium on “Dr. Albert Schweitzer: the man, his time, and his principle of reverence for life”.

While most debates and works on Albert Schweitzer wave between glorification and condemnation of the called “Grand Docteur de Lambarene” and 1952-Nobel Peace Price winner, we assume that understanding Albert Schweitzer deserves going beyond this bipolarity.

At the time of a rekindling interest about Schweitzer and his work, and in addition to new studies on the practice of medicine at Lambarene, we need to look closely and thoroughly at this man of Lambarene, his time, and the foundations and meaning of his principle of reference for life.

Among the sub-themes:

  1. Gabon at the time of Schweitzer: Village, State, and Nation
  2. Albert Schweitzer: the man, the medical doctor, and the myth
  3. Reverence for life: foundations and past, present, and future meaning
