Description

The era of globalization arises numerous challenges to accept plurality, differences and management of cultural diversity, especially, with the return of the ingredient of culture to the field of political action in a context in which culture has a central role in the post Cold War world. Globalization has tried to widespread certain values, practices and cultural expressions, whereas in numerous Arab and Western countries, refuge has been sought in cultural singularity and identity. Therefore, cultural factors have had their impact in the design of national, regional and international policies.

Therefore, diversity and pluralism have become the most important characteristics of contemporary societies. This has required the enactment of cultural laws and policies that take into account cultural diversity and protect the rights of religious and ethnic minorities, in order to avoid “cultural” tensions and sectarianism and to preserve social cohesion. However, this process faces complications and setbacks; some studies show that one in three conflicts that are currently taking place in the world is caused by “cultural” or “religious” reasons.

In the midst of today’s challenges, together with the triumph of the logic of the market, the unification of cultural norms and the influence of information technology, new phenomena have appeared. These new phenomena are affected by the defense of identity and national processes, the protests of new social movements, the claim of cultural rights and the challenges of managing immigration-related issues.

In this context, numerous factors have been combined to create differences whose consequences have not taken long to appear, such as the challenges posed to the State by ethnic nationalism, which often creates a climate of distrust between the majority and the minority, due to the need of all components of society to contribute to the creation of the future by laying the foundations of a common culture and identity, and by taking into consideration recognition, rights, justice, equality and full citizenship.

This means that the management of cultural diversity is an essential component of the structure of any society, and its management is a challenge; since states and nations coincide in the richness of their cultural fabric, but are different in the methods of managing diversity, hence it is an opportunity to take advantage of successful experiences.

In order to fulfill its role in the strengthening of scientific cooperation ties between researchers, the Chair of Studies in Islamic Civilization and Renewal of Religious Thought organizes an international congress on “The Challenges of Cultural Diversity in Europe and the Arab World”, in Granada, in November 16-17, 2016, with the participation of scholars and researchers from Europe, the Arab World and the United States.

The aim of the congress is to contribute to surpass these challenges by studying methods for cultural diversity management in different countries with the goal of exchanging experiences and knowledge, adding new elements to the debate regarding cultural diversity challenges. All of this, based on the need to develop a social engineering for cultural diversity in Arab and European societies, which may consider diversity as a source of richness and an essential part of the solution and not as the source of the problem.
