Core description

The University of Warsaw, the coordinator of DARIAH-PL consortium, together with the“Grodzka Gate – NN Theatre” Centre, a member of the Coalition for Open Education, is inviting  participants for the first workshop of "Public humanities and digital humanities: mutual inspiration and common (digital) tools" series, which will take place in Warsaw on October 3rd (11:00-16:00).

The aim of the planned workshop is to develop basic standards for oral history descriptions  in the perspective of building an online system for exchanging information about such resources. The workshop program includes primarily the work on the draft of a controlled vocabulary for oral history metadata schemas.

The workshop will take place in the Digital Humanities Lab UW, S. Banacha 2C street (CeNT-1, floor 2). We welcome researchers using oral history methods in their academic work as well  the members of institutions involved in gathering and researching oral history resources.

Content

1. the presentation of "Grodzka Gate - NN Theatre" experiences in the field of oral history recordings collecting and processing;
2. the draft presentation of the integration system for information on Polish oral history collections;
3. the working discussion on the sketch metadata schema for oral history recording based on recommendations from the Polish Society of Oral History;
4. the preliminary development of the controlled vocabulary for oral history recordings and transcriptions metadata.

The program can be slightly modificated due to the proposals suggested by the participants.

Monday 10.10.2016

• 13:00 : Basic network visualisations – Radosław Bomba

The main objective of the workshop is to present the assumptions of the new science of networks and its practical applications. The workshops will discuss the major categories of research used in network analysis. They will also include a presentation of open source software available for use in the participants' own projects.

• 13:00 : LoCloud Collections as a digital storytelling platform – Błażej Betański

The workshop will introduce the LoClour Collections tool. The service allows its users to share heritage resources online with the use of cloud technologies. LoCloud Collections is based on the Software-as-a-Service model, which means that users do not need to purchase server space or install standalone applications to maintain digital collections. The shared resources can be used in the creation of research services and visualisations. Of particular importance for the workshop will be creating virtual exhibitions and digital storytelling with the use of LoCloud Collections. The service is mainly directed at small cultural institutions, non-governmental organisations, research teams and private individuals.

• 15:30 : Dynamic social networks: analysis and visualisation – Wiesława Osińska

Dynamic social networks: analysis and visualization. The aim of the workshop is to present two programmes used for dynamic network and data analysis, namely: Gephi and Cytoscape. We will discuss three key issues: downloading data from the Internet, visualisation, and interpretation of research results.

 

• 15:30 : Promoting 3D documentation using the example of the 3D Scanning Work Group as part of the Institute of Archaeology, University of Warsaw – Marta Bura, Janusz Janowski

"Based on their six-year experience, the work group will present the problems inherent in heritage and historical landmark documentation, both in the areas of promotion and research.
During the workshops, participants will have an opportunity to discover methods of acquiring data point clouds and their types (Remake Autodesk, P30 Leica laser scanner, Leica Cyclone, Smarttech). The workshops will also include a presentation of basic software, and the capacities of the modern Internet in publishing data point clouds and 3D models (Sketchfab, TrueView, Pdf 3d), as well as methods of presenting documented objects/landmarks using VR technologies."

• 9:00 :  Image analysis and visualisation tools – Andrzej Radomski, Kamil Stępień

The aim of the workshop is to present selected tools for analysis and visualization of digital images. Digital images are understood widely. The scope of this concept consists of works of art, graphics, movies, or video games. The main problem for modern science is excess data. This also applies to images. Contemporary society produces a huge amount of digital images. Existing methods are often unsuited to processing large data packets or big data. In recent years, however, there were created applications through which we can analyse large sets of data. In the course of the workshop there will be presented programmes such as: ImageJ, Image plot, Sigma Scan Pro, Magix. The specific examples will be shown in terms of their basic capabilities and limitations.

• 9:00 : Cool but dangerous visualisations: testing methodological limits using the example of Wikipedia articles edited in Rstudio – Marcin Wilkowski

Visualising data and text is one of the most important methodologies of digital humanities. The wide accessibility of visualisation tools that enable users to create visually appealing presentations, however, does not come in hand with an awareness of the limits of the medium and common mistakes made while working with data. During the workshop, which is aimed at participants who did not previously work with visualisations, we will discuss and present the characteristics of specific Wikipedia entries and resources. To do this, we will use the Wikipedia API, the R programming language, and visualisation tools available online, to gain an in-depth understanding of the infrastructure of the modern humanist's work tools, and the importance of open heritage institutions resources.

Workshop participants should bring their own laptops (including mouse); tablets are not suited to work with data. participants will also have to download and install the free RStudio software (available on all platforms at https://www.rstudio.com).

• 13:00 : On creating scientific visual narratives in digital collections – Konrad Niciński, Paweł Ryżko, Agnieszka Kochańska

The aim of the workshop is to show the usage of selected visual materials on Nplp.pl website, such as: logotype, typography, extracted graphics from Library of IBL PAN, videos, ways of navigating maps and emphasizing their functions in the narration of a digital collection. Using the example of two collections, Prus Plus and Atlas Polskiego Romantyzmu, methods of implementing visual materials will also be discussed, as well as obstacles pertaining to the process.

• 13:00 : Designing an online research service – Łukasz Kowalski

Cultural and scientific instututions more and more often create online research services. These services can employ digitised books, photographic and iconographic material, or audio and video recordings. In some cases they also use more complicated tools, such as games or 2D and 3D visualisations. During the workshop we will discuss the challenges inherent in such undertakings: methods of project coordination, choice of technological solutions, maintaining the project, ascertaining its usability, team work. Each workshop participant will also offer his or her own project idea.

Course description

The workshop goal is to provide a basic introduction to digital scholarly editions (DSE) encoded with TEI, an eXtensible Markup Language (XML) promote by a TEI Consortium, which develops a standard for the representation of texts in digital form and offers general guidelines for the encoding.

The theoretical introduction will be followed by a hands-on experience (no previous knowledge needed) in using TEI with a XML Editor (oXygen).

An example of working service Karaites Digital Archive eJazyszłar – based on TEI described documents, developed and maintained by Poznań Supercomputing and Networking Center –will be presented.

The workshop will address the legal aspects of sharing resources online – especially cultural resources - in a way that promotes their re-use for educational, creative and commercial purposes. The outcome of this workshop will be included in the development of strategies for providing access to digital collections in the Federation.
