Abstract

This colloquium is devoted to arts criticism through an interdisciplinary approach in a transnational perspective between France, the FRG and the GDR in the 1960-1980's. This is about a question of German critical reception of French art and vice versa, and of a differentiation of this reception according to several artistic fields.

Argument

The book Perspectives croisées. La critique d’art franco-allemande 1870-1945 published in 2009 focuses on imbalance in the Franco-German artistic relationship to the detriment of Germany. France and Germany are both together in a complex relationship, full of rivalry in every aspect. What about the situation in the period between the 1960s and the 1980’s? How would this imbalance continue and how could it be modulated through a tripartite relationship between France, the FRG and the GDR? During the immediate postwar period was the artistic scene in occupied Germany dominated by the French cultural policy: what about the following years?

The Franco-German relations continued to evolve in the establishment of two German states ideologically and culturally opposed, during the Cold War. Consequently, East Germany had limited diplomatic relations with West Germany and France until 1973. Then, what is the role of art criticism in these cultural relations?

This colloquium is devoted to arts criticism through an interdisciplinary approach, including fine arts, as well as decorative arts, cinema, photography, architecture, literature, theatre or dance. If the idea of a French-German imbalance in critical reception mainly concerns first and foremost fine arts, this approach should be tempered by other disciplines. For instance, the French admired German theatre and music for centuries. Thus, on one hand, this is about a question of German critical reception of French art and vice versa, and of a differentiation of this reception according to several artistic fields.

This proliferation of critics will lead to a comparison between the three states and an examination of the place of interdisciplinary in the Franco-German relationship. Did the criticism favour certain disciplines in cultural transfers, but also in the heightening of ideological divergences?

Furthermore, this study must be viewed in the context of « Franco-German friendship » between France and the FRG, and the division of Europe in two blocs, symbolised by the two German states.

The place dedicated to the critics’ individual demarches and approaches in the field of arts and literature will be discussed. Leading figures like German art critics Will Grohmann or Wilhelm Hausenstein have played a crucial role in Franco-German cultural relationship. As for the French, we can also quote: Bernard Lamarche-Vadel, Michel Ragon, Pierre Restany or Michel Tapié. The latter were linked to gallerists, they wrote for reviews and introduced German artists in France and French artists in Germany.

In the end, it will finally be possible to take distance from the notion of cultural transfer and adopt a comparative approach about the practice itself of art criticism in France, the FRG and the GDR.

Submissions that develop applications of these broad themes are especially welcome:
