Photographie & Capitalisme

Abstract

Study Day - Photography & Capitalism - Saturday 20th May 2017
Presentation
Historically described as an "art for all", photography is associated with democratic values. But what about its relations with the capitalism of which it is contemporary? On the economic and cultural level, does the production of photographs involve different values from those attributed by the promoters of its invention in the 19th century? Associated with the world of images, the political stakes of power, forms of propaganda and a consumer society, photography is not unconnected with the debates on alienation and the excesses of capitalism. It is time to open the field of a thorough study of the relations between photography and the capitalist system and to analyze the ambiguities of a medium dependent on practices and customs.
The study day is considered as a starting point for joint research. The papers will focus on the links between photography and capitalism in the 20th century, not only in its economic, but also as a political and ideological dimension. It is from a new angle that the paradoxes of an art maintaining an ambiguous relationship with the capitalist system will be confronted, accentuating its dominance or nourishing its contestation.
You are all warmly invited to come and take part in our exchanges.
