Data First!
Digital Humanities Austria 2017
Published on Wednesday, July 12, 2017
Abstract
The digital turn is increasing the interest for data among the humanities. Data will be produced almost automatically regarding to methods like text recognition and text mining. On the one hand, the work with data offers new challenges for humanities scholars according to its quantity (keyword: Big Data) and its quality (the high error rate of produced data). On the other hand, it reveals unknown and exciting insights and analysis. Submissions according to this topic will be given preference.
Announcement
The Research Center Digital Humanities at the University of Innsbruck, the Austrian Centre for Digital Humanities, CLARIN and DARIAH-AT invite you to submit proposals for the 4th Digital Humanities Austria Conference that takes place in Innsbruck from December the 4th till December the 6th, 2017.
We invite proposals in all areas of Digital Humanities research and related fields that work with digital methods, resources and data.
Special attention will be given to our conference theme: Data First!?

Proposals
Proposals can be submitted for paper presentations, panels, workshops, posters and demonstrations ("Tools Gallery"). Abstracts that will be uploaded at Conftool are considered as proposals.
Theme 1: Data First!?
The digital world of the humanities consists of digital corpora production and archiving, source-critical controlling, data analysis, interpretation and visualization. New methods, techniques and workflows will be developed for these processes. These diverse opportunities are the center of the conference and the call.

Theme 2: DH @ academic disciplines
According to us, Digital Humanities isn't just an academic discipline. It is a label that describes the work with digital data and its methods in the field of humanities. Therefore, proposals from all fields of humanities and social sciences are welcome. These include for example:
- Archaeology
- Classical philology
- Codicology
- Computer Science
- Economics
- Gender studies
- History
- Language
- Law
- Lexicology
- Literature
- Musicology
- Pedagogy
- Performing arts
- Politics
- Philosophy
- Theology
- Visual arts
Theme 3: DH & infrastructures
Digital Humanities without a strong collaboration to research infrastructures are hardly conceivable. Therefore, submissions of the following research fields are also very welcome.
- Archives, Libraries, Museums
- Citizen Science
- Crowd-Sourcing
- Funding Agencies
- Open Access
- Repositories
- Research Data Management
- University Curricula
- Virtual Research Environments
Theme 4: DH research challenges and applications
Digital Humanities in the narrow sense includes different methods and applications, which have to be developed for a successful scientific work. These include for example:
- Automated Text Recognition
- Authorship Attribution
- eLearning
- Network Analysis
- (Big) Data Analysis
- Named Entities Recognition
- Named Entities Linking
- Machine Learning
- Visualization
- Stylometry
- Text Annotation
- Topic Modelling
- Post Correction
Theme 5: Digitization of cultural heritage/research data
The digitization of relevant sources in the scientific work of humanities and social sciences is the most important requirement of a successful digital-humanistic research. The characteristics of the sources, the used devices and the methods pose a challenge in particular.
- Data mining
- Noisy Data
- Linked Open Data
- GIS-Systems
- Best practice projects
- Archiving of Social Network-Corpora
- Resource Types (3-D, Handwritten Material, Multimedia Material etc.)
We are looking forward to your submissions. Please submit your abstract at Conftool at the following link: https://webapp.uibk.ac.at/congress/dha2017/index.php?page=newPaper
