La traversée des frontières
Existential philosophy, poetry and the visual arts in the work of Benjamin Fondane
Philosophie existentielle, poésie et arts visuels dans l’œuvre de Benjamin Fondane
Published on Tuesday, September 05, 2017
Abstract
The aim of the colloquium is to provide a platform for debate on the interdisciplinary relation between philosophy, literature, poetry, and visual arts in Fondane’s work. As a Romanian Jewish émigré, who adopted French as his language after his exile in 1924, Benjamin Fondane offers one of the rare examples of a poet able to cross languages, cultures and genre frontiers: his work encompasses poetry, philosophy, aesthetics, theory of cinema and filmmaking, playwriting and photography.

Argument
Proposals are invited for the first large-scale international conference on Benjamin Fondane in North America. After his death at Auschwitz in October 1944, Fondane has undergone a period of relative neglect until his revival in the 1980s, when his posthumous works were published and his main works were re-printed. Thanks to recent translations, his work is now also becoming better known in the English speaking world.
This conference aims to highlight the relevance of Fondane’s literary and philosophical texts in the context of crossing frontiers. Fondane’s works cross cultural, linguistic, and geographical borders from Romanian culture and language to French language, including works made in Argentina such as his lost film Tararira (1936). His literature of existential voyage, of migration and exodus echoes not only the Jewish diaspora, but also the construction of identities, historical and cultural migrations, as well as universalism. This colloquium is also open to studies exploring the translation of Fondane’s works in several languages, including the reflection of contemporary translators.
