Presentation
The Department of History and Civilization at the European University Institute (EUI) is happy to announce its fourteenth Summer School in Transnational and Comparative History, which will take place in September 2018 in the historic Villa Salviati, looking out over the hills of Florence.
The EUI Department of History and Civilization is a major centre for the study of comparative and transnational European history and of European history in a global perspective. Its annual Summer School has established itself as an exciting and stimulating experience for postgraduate students. Whether you are interested in political, social, cultural, intellectual or economic history, it will give you a unique opportunity to broaden your research interests and methodological reflection.
The summer school will combine discussion of methodological issues in global, transnational and comparative history with case studies by leading specialists from the European University Institute and other major universities, who will also provide feedback on the students' own research projects.
This year’s presentations, covering early modern, modern and contemporary history, will concern the global history of science, Pacific history, the history of revolutions, European integration history, and the history of infrastructure.
You will also have the chance to meet EUI doctoral researchers, participate in the academic life of this centre of excellence, and visit the Historical Archives of the European Union. Information will also be given on possibilities for pursuing doctoral studies at the European University Institute.
Programme
The programme, still to be finalized, includes lectures by Maxine Berg (University of Warwick and Visiting Fellow), Junia Furtado (Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Brazil and Fernand Braudel Fellow), Boris Kolonitsky (European University at St. Petersburg), Angela Romano (EUI), Sagi Schaefer (Tel Aviv University), J. B. Shank (University of Minnesota and Fernand Braudel Fellow)
In addition, you will have an opportunity to explore Florence, one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
