Apprendre une langue : envies et résistances

Abstract

Announcement

The concept of motivation has been poked, pushed, and shoved, to the point of becoming hackneyed and yet remains difficult to define. But what if we addressed the problem from a different angle? In this call for contributions, we wish to focus on, in addition to the word motivation, the words interest, expectation, commitment, desire, and their opposites that express absence: lack, restraint, avoidance, discouragement, reluctance, blockage, resistance. Duclos (2015) considers resistance to change as an “outdated and invalid concept in education”. Narcy-Combes (2018: 22), on the other hand, writes: “Resistance to change” is actually the other side of motivation. When circumstances do not appear favorable to the individual, he does not motivate himself and others believe that he resists. The objective here is to present analyses from teaching experiences, examining the ways in which desires and resistances interact, and highlighting the ensuing effects. We solicit your contributions to build, to reinforce, to undo these constructs, concepts, and phenomena in the context of language teaching and learning in higher education.
