Argument
The URCforSR International Sustainability Conference will take place on September 27-28 in Strasbourg (Palais Universitaire, 9 place de l’Université).
It is organised by the Upper Rhine Cluster for Sustainability Research, a common project of the „Eucor – The European Campus“ Universities in Basel, Freiburg, Karlsruhe, Mulhouse, Strasbourg and Koblenz-Landau (Landau Campus), funded by the INTERREG European Union program. This 3-year project strives to establish a research network with European significance in the field of sustainability research. Joint cross-border and interdisciplinary research activities and the transfer of knowledge to society are its main strategic elements.
The conference will feature keynote lectures by three prestigious scientists in the field:
- Dr. Janet HERING, EAWAG (Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, Dübendorf, Switzerland), on removal of micropollutants in wastewater treatment;
- Dr. Benjamin SOVACOOL (University of Sussex, Brighton, U.K.), on conceptual frameworks for energy transitions;
- Dr. Alexandra-Maria KLEIN (University of Freiburg, Germany), on biodiversity and ecosystem services in evolving landscapes.
Further, short presentations by 27 speakers from France, Germany, Switzerland, Canada and India covering the key topics of cross-border and sustainability research from all disciplines of science and technology, including engineering, socio-economic sciences and the humanities, in three parallel sessions “Transformations & resources”, “Governance and multiculturalism”, and “Energy”. Posters will also be on display for the entire duration of the conference.
An innovation forum will also address exchanges between researchers, industrial networks, competitivity clusters, socio-economic stakeholders and local and regional authorities of the trinational Upper Rhine region. Its objective will be to help build international collaborative research projects between academia and the private sector, and raise participants' awareness on cross-border entrepreneurship, working towards a more sustainable society.
